Primaries: Snead wins unofficial tally, to represent Republicans as supervisor candidate in November

Republican primary elections were held locally in the Towns of Forestport and Long Lake on Tuesday, September 10th. All results are unofficial pending the receipt of absentee ballots.

In the Town of Forestport race for Supervisor, Parker Snead received 171 votes to incumbent William A. Hasenauer’s 157 for a total of 328 votes cast. Snead got 52.13% of the vote to Hasenauer’s 47.87%.

Hasenauer will remain on the November ballot as the Conservative party candidate.

For Highway Superintendent, incumbent William G. Gardner took 55.62% of the vote over Louis J. Sowich who received 44.07%. Gardner received 183 votes, Sowich took 145, and with one write-in there was a total of 329 votes. Continue reading

CAA passes resolution supporting rail corridor

The Central Adirondack Association Board of Directors passed a resolution on Thursday, September 5 in support of maintaining the rail and recreation trail system on the Remsen-Lake Placid travel corridor.

The resolution supports the original concept of the 1995 DEC Unit Management Plan for the railroad corridor, which provides for the development of rail service and a recreational trail.

In the resolution, the CAA directors acknowledge the proven economic impact of the Adirondack Scenic Railroad for the local communities, the historical and cultural significance of the railroad, and the access provided by the railroad for the physically challenged.

Loon quilt raffle to benefit Ad’k Center for Loon Conservation

Biodiversity Research Institute’s (BRI’s) Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation is sponsoring a Loon Quilt Raffle, with proceeds to support the organization’s loon research and outreach initiatives. 2013-NS BRI-AdkCtrLn#79C194

The hand-made queen-sized quilt depicts a pair of loons raising two chicks on an Adirondack lake and is based on a McKenna Ryan design.

It was created by Dr. Nina Schoch, Coordinator of BRI’s Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation and quilted by Susan Ochs of Saranac Lake.

New course record set at 2013 Adirondack Canoe Classic

It was another successful year for the Adirondack Canoe Classic with a new course record set by the four-person team of Andy Trebold, Steve Lajoie, Nick Walton and Matt Rimer who finished the 90 mile course in 11 hours, 6 minutes and 29 seconds.

The previous record was 11 hours, 24 minutes.

The race began from the Old Forge Pond on Friday, September 6 with 275 registered racers and ended Sunday, September 8 in Saranac Lake with 260 crossing the finish line.

Tuesday, Sept. 10th Town of Forestport ballot among region’s busiest for next week’s primaries

Area political parties will be holding their primary elections on Tuesday, September 10th to determine which candidates will be representing them in the November general elections.

The Town of Forestport will hold a Republican primary for the offices of Town Supervisor, Highway Superintendent and two seats on the Town Council.

For Town Supervisor, Parker Snead is running against incumbent William A. Hasenauer. For Highway Superintendent, Louis J. Sowich is challenging incumbent William G. Gardner.

Brian J. Albert, Charles E. Scott, Brian P. Judge and Ronald J. Scouten are vying for two vacating seats on the Town Council.

View announces John Brennan as its new marketing man

John Brennan has been hired as the new marketing manager at View. Brennan has a number of years of experience in marketing, primarily in the private sector.

“We’re really excited to have someone in the position. We went through the whole summer without a marketing position, and having the position filled is key,” said View Executive Director Jennifer Potter Hayes.IMG_8307

Brennan’s responsibilities of this position are to increase View’s visibility and visitation by developing and implementing a marketing strategy.

He anticipates doing marketing on a higher level and bringing fresh light on ways to open up new markets.

Plein Air artists produce 52 paintings over weekend for View auction

View’s Plein Air Paint Out event brought in 38 artists from around New York state who sat through rain and sun and produced 52 pieces of artwork over the Labor Day weekend.

On Friday and Saturday, August 30 and 31, artists spread out over the area to paint iconic downtown scenes such as Slickers and the Old Forge Dam, and natural settings including the Moose and Black Rivers.

All 52 pieces sold at the auction that was held at View on Sunday afternoon. Over 120 people were in attendance to bid on the pieces with winning bids ranging from $100 to $2,000.

Consignment pieces were also on sale over the weekend, some by artists who participated in the Plein Air event.

View Exhibi-tions Manager Cory Card said the event was a big success, exceeding last year’s total of funds raised.

Some of the more well known participating artists included Katherine O’Neil, Martha Deming, Claire Mann, Gordy Bashant and Joyce Hanson.

Dayton Jones painted three downtown scenes over the course of the weekend. One was of the Strand, titled “Movies and Food”; one of the mailboat, titled “Dry Dock”; and another of the tour boat, titled “Clearwater at Rest.”

Jones was beaten out in terms of number of paintings completed by Joanne Quinlivan who painted four paintings for the auction.

Card extended his thanks to sponsor Montezuma Winery all the volunteers who made the event possible, in particular Terry Rozycki, Michele deCamp, Paula Weal, Margo Boylan and all those in the kitchen as well. He also acknowledged Linda Weal, past exhibitions manager, who returned to View for the event and all of the participating artists.

Card, in his new position for only a few weeks, helped with handling the artwork and worked with the artists. He will be fully in charge of next year’s event that goes into the planning stage next week.
