Garden Club brings holiday party to Lakeside Terrace

The Old Forge Garden Club sponsored a Holiday Party for the residents of Lakeside Terrace in Old Forge on Tuesday, December 6.

The Garden Club members in attendance brought platefuls of homemade cookies and poinsettia plants for each of the 23 Lakeside residents. Special guest Jimmy Ortiz, owner of Feathers & Boughs Inc., demonstrated how to revive old Christmas wreaths and how to make new wreaths and other holiday decorations. The seven finished decorations were raffled at the end of the presentation.

Winners were Betty Rose Byszewski, Peg Morgan, Phoebe Greene, Dorothy Walker, Jimmy Ortiz, Marilyn Gaebler, and Brenda Carmer.

Kiwanis Christmas for Kids another success

Each year the Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks collects and distributes gifts and toys to special families in the Woodgate, Thendara, and Old Forge, Eagle Bay, and Inlet area.

Diane Amos, Town of Webb School, Key Club and Builders Club Advisor with some of the students that assisted with the Christmas for Kids Gift Wrapping Party.

In 2011, this very worthwhile program provided gifts and toys to 98 children in 52 families. The distribution included over 300 gifts, theatre tickets, knitted articles, a book, a jar of peanut butter and a ham for each family. Gifts were also provided to the Otter Lake Fire Department for their fire truck Santa distribution program.

This year Kiwanis again partnered with the Marine Corps League Toys for Tots Program, which greatly helped in providing the appropriate gifts for all ages of children.

Gift and toy collection locations were located at Adirondack Bank, Brooker True Value Hardware, Community Bank, Dan’s Big M, George’s Thing, Inlet Department Store (ACE), Kinney Drugs, Old Forge Department Store (ACE), Smith Marine and Old Forge Hardware. Continue reading

200 children enjoy Kiwanis-sponsored holiday film

Close to 200 area children enjoyed free admittance to the film, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, on Saturday, December 17 at the Strand Theatre in Old Forge.

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks, in cooperation  with Bob Card and Helen Zyma, owners of the Strand, were sponsors of the event.

The children were also treated to a free popcorn and drink, and enjoyed a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The Kiwanis Club wishes to thank all those in the community who so generously contribute to the various fund raising events that make programs such as this possible.

Library Elves host family Christmas Party

Children and adults filled the Old Forge Library on Tuesday evening, December 20, for the Christmas Party hosted by Library Elves, Jingle Belle and Snowflake.

It featured a craft table for making Christmas ornaments, a reading of “The Night Before Christmas,” by Key Club member Colin Criss, and a performance of the play, “A Christmas Tree for Kitty.”

The cast included Sarah Beck, Fern Bick, Rianna Lindsay, Bella Beck, Chelsea Clark, and Grace Heath, with Chloe and Charlotte Clark, Alexis Heath, Trinity Liddle and Robin Smith as the carolers.

Music was provided by pianist, Maureen Van Slyke.

Hot chocolate and cookies were served following the performance.
