The fire boat, the first of its kind in Herkimer county when it was first put into service in 1950, is essential to the fire company as 25 percent of the properties on Big Moose Lake are boat-access only. Also, several properties are difficult to access due to poor private road conditions

Because of the fire boat, Big Moose personnel are able to respond faster, establish an initial attack, and establish a constant water supply at the time of a fire emergency. Continue reading

The water ski show at Big Moose dates back over eighty years.

The first organized ski show was held on Big Moose Lake in 1948 when Joe Dunn, Dick Rivett, Bud Dunn and Charlie Adams performed behind a Chris Craft.

The shows were popular through the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s when solemn skis and trick skis were introduced.

The show continues to evolve and push the limits of the performers and adding new acts to the show.

The annual Big Moose ski show was held on Saturday, August 10th with 32 acts performing and many support personnel driving boats and serving as safety observers.

New York City-based Frank Williams among first vacationers to Big Moose

by Roy Crego, Guest Contributor

FrankWilliamsphotoAmong the early vacationers at Big Moose Lake was Frank Williams. Frank was born around 1842 in New York City to immigrant Welsh parents. He rose steadily in the business world and eventually became the senior partner in Williams, Russell & Co., a major coffee and sugar brokerage with offices at 101 Front Street in Manhattan.

On the 1880 Census, Frank, his wife Lavinia, daughter Julia, and a servant were listed as living across the East River in Brooklyn at 55 3rd Place—an attractive brownstone.

Coffee may have been Frank’s business, but for pleasure he and his wife traveled regularly to the Adirondacks and Big Moose. Joseph F. Grady, in his The Adirondacks: Fulton Chain-Big Moose Region (1933), tells how guides Jack Sheppard and Richard Crego built one of the earliest permanent camps on the lake for Williams. It was located on the northeast shore near the inlet.   Continue reading
