Former Old Forge resident Derek Pross and his wife Stephanie Gadino Pross, winemakers at Gadino Cellars of Washington, VA, received a Gold Medal for their 2010 Nebbiolo at the Virginia Governor’s Cup Gala held in Richmond, VA on Monday, February 22nd.

Over 400 wines were entered in the competition which is considered one of the most stringent competitions in the country.

The competition was held in Richmond in January and is only open to Virginia wines made with 100% Virginia grapes.  Continue reading →

Webb nordic teams compete in state meet; Henry Uzdavinis qualifies for Jr. Nationals

The Town of Webb school girls and boys nordic teams,  who earned positions on their respective NY state teams, competed in the NYSPHSSA Championships at Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid on Monday and Tuesday, February 22 and 23rd.

The winners of the girls’ competition was determined by combined scores in a 7.5K individual race and a three-person relay race, with the boys competing in a 10.5K individual race and three-person relay.

The girls team placed second overall in the competition.

Henry Uzdavinis finished 12th in the individual race with a time of 30:26:3. Coupled with his time of 7:31:0 in the relay, he qualified to compete in the Junior National Nordic Ski Championships held in Cable, WI from March 6 to 13th.

Letter: Chili Bowl Phenomenon

To the Editor:

Last Saturday’s Chili Bowl Gathering at VIEW-arts reminded me that NO ONE does it alone!

As LIFE itself is one GRANDE RELAY of energy—our generation stepping on the shoulders of its prior counterparts. So, too, does this reach into our small Adirondack world and like events.

The enthusiasm of Saturday’s bowl-makers, that included Sherry and Nancy and others of Bette Rintrona’s mentorship, began the custom of today’s ‘chili bowls.’  Continue reading →

Conditions change day to day; caution important on frozen lakes

Weather over the weekend wasn’t what snowmobilers or skiers wanted as it rained most of Saturday. They still had the drag races on Big Moose Lake that day.

They must have been ducking the hole left by the pick-up plow truck that was retrieved out of the lake on Tuesday by Morin’s Tow Service.

Feeling safe and secure despite living in world of uncertainty

Back in February 1974, there were a few things going on in the world that really got me thinking.

The Symbionese Liberation Army, an American self-styled left-wing revolutionary organization, kidnapped 19-year-old heiress Patty Hearst.

They were holding her hostage for a few million dollars, and it made me a bit uneasy that we had an army roving around our country that was scooping up kids and holding them for ransom. Continue reading →

How do I avoid early withdrawal penalty?

I am under the age of 59-and-a-half and have been ordered by a divorce court to take money out of my traditional IRA to pay my former spouse. Is there any way I can avoid the 10% early withdrawal penalty?

The only divorce-related exception for IRAs is if you transfer your interest in the IRA to  your former spouse, and the transfer is under a divorce or separation instrument (see IRC section 408(d)(6). The rules for this transfer either:

1. Changing the name on the IRA from your name to that of your former spouse (if transferring your entire interest in that IRA), or

2. A trustee to trustee transfer from your IRA to one established by your former spouse. In this case a rollover from your IRA to your former’s spouses IRA does not qualify. Continue reading →

CAP-21probes interest in Main Street revitalization funds

The Central Adirondack Partnership (CAP-21) is interested in hearing from owners of commercial buildings and mixed-use properties (business and rental apartments), as to their interest in participating in a New York State Main Street Program.

The NY Main Street program may provide up to 50% of building renovation and remediation costs for buildings within an identified core revitalization area.

The intent of Main Street is to improve the appearance of the business district, promote downtown revitalization, and to boost additional private investment.  Continue reading →
