Kiwanis Club announces winners of Sports Challenge, Snowshoe Classic

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks held its 16th Annual Kiwanis Winter Sports Challenge during Old Forge Winter Carnival on Saturday, February 6th.

Included in the event were the traditional fund-raising cross-country ski and snowshoe treks to raise funds for various Kiwanis children’s projects.

In addition, the Kiwanis Club, Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company and McCauley Mountain Ski Area jointly sponsored the 6th Annual McCauley Snowshoe Classic. Continue reading

Remsen–Lake Placid Corridor: Ad’k Park Agency approves amendments, allows for rail removal north of Tupper Lake

The Adirondack Park Agency (APA) determined that proposed amendments to the 1996 Remsen – Lake Placid Travel Corridor Unit Management Plan/FSEIS (The 2016 Plan) conforms to the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan (APSLMP).

This determination was made after APA deliberated during  its February board meeting.

The APA will now forward the conformance resolution to the Commissioners of the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Depart-ment of Transportation for final adoption.  Continue reading

Service held for Devere L. ‘Dutch’ Vandervort, 91

RDC073826-1_20160202Devere L. “Dutch” Vandervort, 91, of Burnsville, MN, formerly of Old Forge, NY, San Diego, CA and Tomah, WI, passed away on February 1, 2016.

Dutch retired from Eastman Kodak after a distinguished career of 30-plus years.

He was an active and committed volunteer at VIEW, the arts center in Old Forge. Most recently he sat on the By Laws Committee in 2010-11; many of his suggestions were implemented. He was a generous donor, making gifts to name the Vandervort Gallery and the Executive Director’s office in memory of his daughter Susan.  Continue reading
