Two Centennial celebrations set at library art opening

The Old Forge Library invites all to the Library’s Centennial Celebration on Sunday, July 13 that will feature an opening reception for an art exhibit, A Blessed Journey, by Gerda Wikander.IMG_4859

Wikander, who will be celebrating her 100th birthday the same day, has spent her summers in the Adirondacks since 1917.

The reception will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. and will include acoustic music by flutist Jesse Bruchac and guitarist Dan Vellone. Continue reading

Mr. Moose at Helldiver Pond

The Bull Moose that has been making occasional visits to Helldiver Pond for the past ten seasons has returned, according to outdoor columnist Gary Lee, who took this photo of him last week. Should others happen upon him while out in the wild, Gary advises staying a nice distance back, so as not to disturb him; and have a long lens on hand for capturing the encounter!

Postmark cancellation event to honor President Benjamin Harrison

In commemoration of the 125th anniversary of President Benjamin Harrison’s inauguration and the Harrison exhibit at the Goodsell Museum, the Old Forge Post Office will host a special postmark cancellation event on Thursday, July 10th.

President Harrison had a summer retreat on the Fulton Chain and was instrumental in establishing the mail boat service.  Continue reading

Inlet sets July 4th weekend events

Inlet’s Fourth of July celebration will begin at Fern Park with the annual Ping Pong Ball Drop at 1 p.m. This event brings hundreds of children up to age 12 to the park who will watch as Payne’s Air Service drops ping-pong balls onto the ball field from a seaplane.   Continue reading

Cynthia Ann Bashant confirmed as Federal Judge in California

Cynthia Ann Bashant, formerly of New Hartford, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to be a Federal Judge for the Southern District of California.

In 2000 Bashant was appointed to the San Diego Superior Court. As a judge, she has presided over more than one thousand cases that have gone to verdict or judgement—including more than 100 criminal jury trials. Continue reading
