NY State Parks visitation tops 60 million in 2013; overnight camping hits new high

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) announced Wednesday that state campgrounds had their busiest year on record, while more than 60.1 million people visited New York state parks and historic sites in 2013.

This marks the second straight year that visitation has topped 60 million.

“It was a banner year for many of our popular upstate tourism destinations,” State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey said.

“It’s wonderful to know that so many people are taking advantage of this scenic and beautiful system year after year,” she said. Continue reading →

Petitions available for Webb School Board candidates

One five-year term seat on The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education—commencing on July 1—is up for election this year.

Northern Forest Canoe Trail welcomes Karrie Thomas as new Exec. Director

Warren Cook, president of the board of directors of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, has announced that Karrie Thomas is its new executive director. Karrie Thomas

She takes over from outgoing director Kate Williams.

A native of New Hampshire, Thomas graduated from Colorado College.

Thomas is a whitewater kayaker who has co-led private expeditions to Chile, India, Mexico, Nepal, and Peru, as well as throughout North America. Continue reading →

Service planned for Stephen J. Carter, 60

Stephen J. Carter, 60, passed away December 28, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer in Sarasota, FL. Stephen married Phyllis Bolmer, formerly of Old Forge, and over the last 16 years vacationed every year in the Adirondack Mountains. Stephen Carter

He is survived by his wife, four children, four grandchildren, mother, three brothers, one sister, several nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
