Old Forge Library acknowledged by NY State at Friends Luncheon

It’s been a busy week at the Old Forge Library with the Friends of the Old Forge Library’s annual luncheon held on Monday, February 10 and the Sweetheart Bake-Off on Wednesday, February 12th.

Over 80 library supporters enjoyed the luncheon which started with a variety of sandwiches and soups provided by DiOrio’s Market, and finished with the serving of slices of a book-shaped cake—baked by Trish Sehring—commemorating the library’s beginnings on February 12, 1914.

Prior to the luncheon, Library Board President Don Kelly read a letter of congratulations from State Senator Hugh T. Farley to Library Director Isabella Worthen in recognition of the library’s centennial year.

“As Chair of the NYS Senate Select Committee on Libraries, I am most impressed with the services provided by the historic and extraordinary library. I am honored to recognize this significant milestone in the library’s history and look forward to working with you on issues of mutual concern,” stated Farley.

The library was also acknowledged with a NYS Senate Resolution, which stated:

Romaine ‘Romey’ Gallo, 76: Former Old Forge resident passes away in NC

Romaine Bruno Gallo, of Surf City, NC, formerly of Gatlinburg, TN and formerly Boonville, NY passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center after greater than a decade of battling Multiple Myeloma.

Romaine “Romey” was born on November 22, 1937 to Bruno and Michalina Gallo at home in West Leyden, NY the youngest of ten brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years Elaine Mooney Gallo.

Romey and Elaine were married on October 1, 1960 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Rome, NY which started a love affair for the storybooks. Continue reading →

Services held for Kyle Douglas Riedman, 24

Kyle D. Riedman, 24, of Old Forge, passed away unexpectedly on February 7, 2014, as a result of injuries sustained in a snowmobile accident.kyle_riedman

Kyle was born in Utica, NY on August 7, 1989, to Douglas and Judy (McGlynn) Riedman and lived his entire life in Old Forge.

Starting with the Kinderwood preschool program, he then attended Town of Webb Schools and graduated in 2008 amongst a special group of lifelong friends.

He continued his education at Paul Smith’s College, earning an Associate of Science Degree in Agricultural and Landscape Management and a Bachelors of Science in Forestry and Vegetation Management in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Continue reading →

Spring service planned for Ivan A. Kaye, 86

Ivan A. Kaye, 86, of Otter Lake, passed away February 6, 2014 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Sarasota, FL.

He was born April 24, 1927 in Bellingham, MA, a son of Clarence and Janet Connelly Kaye.

He graduated from Westbor-ough High School in 1945 and then served in the Navy from 1945 to 47.

He was employed at Gold Seal Stationary in Massachusetts. Ivan retired from Angelica Corporation of Utica as a stationary steam engineer. Continue reading →

Public Access: No one should have to do battle with a blocked exit

For some people if they didn’t have a bad attitude, they wouldn’t have an attitude. When that bad attitude is displayed it can rub off pretty quick on everyone involved. 

Offering apologies now, before they are needed, always remember that all exits shall be maintained inside and out at all times.

It doesn’t matter whether “they did it last year” or “so-in-so said this was okay” or “there are other exits”… if it is an exit, it shall be clear and accessible from the inside and maintained to a public area on the outside.

This is not hard to understand, nor is this negotiable.

There are many places of public assembly all over the Town of Webb. To name a few… bars, restaurants and gathering places.  Continue reading →

Barnstormers to meet Feb. 18

The Inlet Barnstormers Snowmobile Club will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18 at the Inlet Information Office.

Election of officers for next year’s season will be held during the meeting. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend. More information is available by calling (315) 357-5233.

Ad’k Cardboard Sled Race Circuit sets local races

Four races remain on the Adirondack Cardboard Sled Race Circuit, with racers needing three events of the season’s five to qualify for the circuit championship.
