Eagle Bay Fire Department plans chili cook-off Feb. 22

The Eagle Bay Fire Department invites all local restaurants, professional and amateur cooks, and those who cook for local fire houses and organizations to enter its inaugural Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, February 22nd.

Chili will be judged in the following categories: Professional, Amateur,  Fire Department  and People’s Choice. Individuals, organizations and restaurants will compete to win cash prizes while fire departments vie for bragging rights and the honor of having their name engraved on a rotating trophy.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the fire hall on Route 28. Judging will begin at 1 p.m. Cooks need not be present at the time of judging to win.

Tickets on sale: Basket Raffle to benefit MAC’s Safe Ride

Barbara Green of Adirondack Green House Basketry has donated an Adirondack pack basket for raffle to benefit MAC’s Safe Ride.

The basket is filled with campfire-themed items donated by local businesses with a total value of $400.

It will be on display in the chalet at McCauley Mountain throughout the winter.

The drawing will take place at McCauley on Sunday, March 16 during the St. Patrick’s Weekend festivities. You do not have to be present to win.

Tickets are $3 each or four for $10. They are available for purchase at the Last Run Café, The Old Mill, The Front Door Diner/Back Door Bar, Slickers, Tony Harpers, Souvenir Village, and The Water’s Edge Inn.

Webb School Music Department sponsers trip to New York City

The music department at the Town of Webb School is sponsoring a trip to New York City to see the Broadway musical, Matilda, on Wednesday, March 26th.

Tickets are currently available for purchase at a cost of $165 per person which includes a Front Mezzanine show ticket at the Schubert Theatre, Birnie Bus coach transportation, and bus drivers’ tips.

Busses depart the school at 4 a.m. and once in the city, you are free to sightsee, shop etc. until the show begins at 2 p.m. Busses depart the city immediately following the show.

Card of thanks

The family of Claude Lecours would like to thank all the people who expressed their sympathy at the time of his passing.

To all those who had kind words to say about him, who visited at the Funeral Home, and who sent sympathy cards, mass cards and prayer cards.

Those who brought food, sent flowers and plants, and those who made a donation in Claude’ memory or lent a helping hand when needed.

View sets new winter hours

View, the arts center in Old Forge, has announced new winter hours. In continuing to provide year-round availability, View will be open to the public Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. through April 30th.

Workshops, fitness classes, special events, and the Kinderwood program will continue with normal hours.

Loaves & Fishes luncheon held at Niccolls Church

The first of the winter Loaves & Fishes Café luncheons was held at Niccolls Memorial Church in Old Forge on Thursday, January 23rd.

Neighbors from Woodgate to Raquette Lake gathered at the church to enjoy a free lunch of assorted soups, sandwiches, desserts and cold and hot beverages.

The next luncheon is planned for Thursday, February 27 at St. Bartholomew’s Church on Crosby Blvd. in Old Forge.

Transportation can be arranged by calling Beverly Meeker at (315) 369-2234.

The Loaves & Fishes community luncheons are co-sponsored by Niccolls Memorial Church, St. Anthony’s and St. Bartholomew’s Catholic churches, as well as various community members.

Central Ad’k Kiwanis honors Al Stripp

Members of Central Adirondack Kiwanis presented longtime member Al Stripp with an Honorary Membership at an event held on Thursday, January 16th.

Stripp, a 50-plus year resident of Old Forge, joined Central Adirondack Kiwanis in 1993 and served as club treasurer for several years. He was active in all the many child-oriented  programs of Kiwanis for over 20 years.

During his years as art teacher at the Town of Webb School, he also coached many championship soccer teams.

He was a board member of the Central Adirondack Association, and along with his late wife Lorraine, was a longtime volunteer, at the Arts Center/Old Forge, now VIEW.

He currently resides at Sunset Nursing Home in Boonville where he enjoys participating in a variety of activities.
