Open letter to the community

Members of the Old Forge Volunteer Fire Department invite the community to a donation dinner at Billy’s Italian-American Restaurant on Thursday, January 9 where 20 percent of all sales will be directed to the fire department.

Come out and enjoy a great meal while supporting the work of the Old Forge Volunteer Fire Department.

Snowmobile class slated January 18

The Inlet Barnstormers Snowmobile Club will offer a children’s snowmobile safety course on Saturday, January 18 at the Inlet Volunteer Emergency Services building on the corner of Route 28 and Limekiln Rd. The course begins at 8 a.m.

This is the New York State Parks required course for children between the ages 10 and 17 to operate a snowmobile off their personal property.

Registration opens on January 6 and is available by calling Ernie Gilbert at (315) 369-3695.

Unfortunate way to enter the holidays

To the Superintendent and Board of Education of Inlet Common School:

As I’m sure the Board has anticipated, I’ll have to tender my resignation from the part-time teaching position at the Inlet Common School in the wake of my daughter Gwen’s sudden termination at the school.

For me to remain would surely cause a distraction for the students, and would be awkward for myself and everyone else who is involved. Continue reading

Richard Roberts, 85, former Old Forge resident passes away in North Carolina

Richard Roberts, 85, of Selma, NC passed away peacefully on December 18, 2013.

Born in Rome, NY on August 15, 1928, Richard attended St. Aloysius Academy. He married Barbara Ann Williams on June 27, 1953; a loving union that lasted until Barbara’s passing on December 9, 2004.

Richard worked in the accounting department at Rome Manufacturing, a division of Revere Copper and Brass, until his retirement in 1982.

Upon retiring, Richard and Barbara spent many years traveling to visit friends and family. Continue reading

One Square Mile of Hope: Informational meeting set January 13

The One Square Mile of Hope Committee recently announced it will attempt to regain the Guinness World Record for the largest floating raft in an event scheduled for September 13 in Inlet.

The committee, led by co-chairs Connie Perry and Carolyn Belknap, will be joined by the Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks in bringing paddlers together to regain the record that was set in 2011, when 1,902 vessels assembled on Fourth Lake.

The event also served as a breast cancer research fundraiser, bringing in over $80,000 for the cause.

The record was broken by a group at Sutton’s Bay on Lake Michigan in August 2013 which brought together 2,099 boats. Continue reading

Quilts Unlimited Exhibit ending Jan. 5th with raffle

A raffle of a full-size quilt, stitched and donated by the Pointed Pine Quilters of Old Forge, will mark the ending of the Quilts Unlimited Exhibition at View on Sunday, January 5th.

The “Northern Wilderness Quilt” is currently on display at the exhibit. Tickets for the raffle are available at View for $2 each or three for $5 and can be purchased in person or by calling (315) 369-6411 ext. 201. Continue reading
