Old Forge Library receives donation at Anne LaBastille tribute event

Eagle Bay native Leslie Suprenant presented a program on the life of Anne LaBastille to a group of over 75 friends and fans of the late author at the Old Forge Library on Friday, September 20th.

Suprenant, an ecologist for the NYS DEC, was a longtime friend of LaBastille’s.

As a fellow NYS licensed guide and co-instructor of Wilderness Women Workshops, they shared many outdoor adventures together.

In her tribute, Suprenant talked about LaBastille’s family history and her childhood, as well as her professional achieve-ments as an ecologist, author and woods-woman.

During the program, Suprenant presented a $500 check to Old Forge Library Director Izzie Worthen which was bequeathed to the library by LaBastille.

LaBastille, an award-winning author of the Woods-woman series of books, passed away in 2011.

Memorial Service set Saturday for Deb ‘Pearly’ Wright Pierce

Musicians Band Together TOW Bar to host Jon Liebing benefit on Sunday, Sept. 29th

The TOW Bar Inn on Main Street in Old Forge will be the site of a Sunday, September 29 gathering in support of area musician Jon Liebing, who recently broke his fibula.

The Lift a Leg for Liebing event will be held from 2 to 11 p.m. and features live music, free food and drafts, and a 50/50 Raffle. Admission is $15.

Among the bands performing at the event are: Paul Case and Kids Again, Andy Minnie, Joe Bolton and John Christy, Doug Green, Poor Tim, Dave Porter of 805, Bob & Dave, and Liebing’s Beatles tribute band, Plastic Soul.  Continue reading

North Country Region receives planning award

A plan that maps sustainability strategies for the North Country region has achieved recognition from the Upstate New York Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA), a professional institute for certified planners.

Produced as part of the Statewide “Cleaner Green Communities” initiative created by Governor Andrew Cuomo, the North Country’s plan, titled “Our Economy,” features the combined efforts of leadership from a seven-county consortium, that was assisted by the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) and Ecology and Environment (E&E), and hundreds of participants across the region.  Continue reading

Central Adirondack Kiwanis named Distinguished Club for 2011–2012

Carolyn Trimbach, Central Division Lt. Governor of the Kiwanis Club, has announced that the Central Adirondack Kiwanis has earned Distinguished Club Status for the Program year 2011-12, as designated by Kiwanis International.

Herkimer County Humane Society benefit set Saturday at Van Auken’s

Pairing for Caring in the Adirondacks, a charity event to support the Herkimer County Humane Society will be held on Saturday, September 28 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Van Auken’s Inne in Thendara.

The event will feature wine, beer and cheese tastings, door prizes, raffles, and give-aways. Donation is $20 per person with 100 percent of the proceeds benefitting the HCHS.

An HCHS van will also be on-site to collect supplies needed at the shelter such as blankets, linens, pet food, cleaning supplies and toys. Representatives report they are particularly short on cat litter and bleach.

Greco family welcomes son, Silas John

Silas John Greco

Guy and Allison Greco of Boonville have announced the birth of their son, Silas John, on September 11, 2013. Silas weighed 6 lbs., 7 oz. and measured 20 inches long. 

He joins older siblings Alexandria Williams and Marissa and Kevin Greco.

Grandparents are Guy Sr. and Charlene Greco of Old Forge and Barb and the late John Paciello of Utica.
