Old Forge Fire Department responds to calls over July 4th holiday weekend

Old Forge Fire Chief Charlie Bogardus reported two fire calls over the Fourth of July weekend.

Old Forge fire personnel responded to an early morning fire on Saturday, July 6 at Tony Harper’s Pizza & Clam Shack on Main Street, Old Forge.

According to Chief Bogardus, the fire appeared to have started from smoldering material in a planter outside the door of the restaurant.

At the time of the call, occupants of the apartments above the restaurant were evacuated with the assistance of Town of Webb Police Chief John Russell and Officer Tony Sege.

The fire was extinguished and there were no reported injuries. The restaurant experienced some water damage but was able to open the same day, Bogardus said. Continue reading

AARP driving course slated

An AARP driving course will be held at the Inlet Senior Center on Monday and Tuesday, July 22 and 23 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. both days.

The cost of the course is $17 for members and $19 for non-members.

Registration is available by calling Bob Seager at (315) 392-3808. The Senior Center is located at the Inlet Town Hall.

View Intern Nicholas Daniluk who received the Outstanding Portrait Award

The 62nd Annual Central Adirondack Art Show opened with a reception on Friday, July 5 at View.

As part of this year’s show, 99 year old Gerta Wikander was honored for participating in the show for 62 years. A retrospective of her work is currently on display at View.

The exhibition is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. until Sunday, August 11. Continue reading

Jolly Moosers Bake, Craft, Flea Market set July 13th

The Jolly Moosers will host their annual Bake Sale, Craft Show and Flea Market on Saturday, July 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Big Moose Fire Hall.

Local crafters and bakers from Old Forge, Boonville, Big Moose and neighboring towns will be selling a variety of items such as baskets, wooden items, rag rugs, knitwear and baked goods, too. For the first time, frozen meals including soups will also be sold.

The Jolly Moosers are also hosting a food tent with hot dogs, drinks and homemade beef BBQ.

The Big Moose Fire Company will be putting on their fundraiser at the same location with a chicken BBQ meal for $10. That will start at 11 a.m. until they are sold out.  Continue reading

Webb Police Dept. reports recent activity

Town of Webb Police Chief John Russell reported the following activities over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

• A Plattsburgh couple and a two-year-old child escaped injury when their vehicle was hit by a trailer carrying a sailboat on Route 28 on Friday, July 5 at approximately 4 p.m.

According to Chief Russell, Sean and Rebecca Conklin were traveling southbound when the northbound trailer being hauled by James Blasland of Liverpool, NY came loose just north of the highway department garage.

The sailboat came off the trailer and struck the vehicle, taking the car roof off, Russell said.

Chief Russell reported that the Conklins saw the sailboat coming their way and were able to duck.  Continue reading

Double Barrel Blues Band

Double Barrel Blues Band

The Summer Concert series held on the Old Forge Lakefront on Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. will feature the Double Barrel Blues Band on Sunday, July 14th.

The Double Barrel Blues Band is a modern blues group known for its aggressive guitar and authentic blues sounds.

All are welcome to bring a folding chair or blanket and enjoy the free concert.

The Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the Town of Webb.

Johnson and Company will perform during Inlet’s “Sunsets by the Lake” Summer Concert Series on Saturday, July 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Arrowhead Park Lakefront.

All are invited to bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy the free concert and a spectacular sunset. Rain location is Fern Park Pavilion.

Johnson and Company’s sound is a mix of rock, soul, funk and blues.

The band’s recently released CD, Funky Guitar Man, features the song, Blues Train, which was inspired by the Adirondack Railroad.

The CD and t-shirts will be available for purchase at the concert.
