Inlet Common School musicians to perform at state solo festival

For the first time ever, Inlet Common School instrumental students will perform at a New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Solo Festival, which will be held at the Watertown High School on Saturday, April 27.

Music Teacher Caitlyn Goodwin, Principal Chris Holt and the school board collaborated to get the Inlet school registered as a NYSSMA member this year.

Four Inlet students will participate in this festival on Saturday—Joseph Townsend on snare drums, Britney Levi on flute, Alexander Sutherland on alto saxophone and Natalie Brownsell on French horn.

The students will each play three scales for the judges, as well as a challenging piece which he/she has been working on for the festival. Continue reading →

Local singers welcome to join regional chorus

All singers are welcome to join a regional chorus to perform choral classics in two upcoming local concerts under the direction of Brian Johnston.

The first concert is scheduled to be held at the Presbyterian Church in Boonville on Monday, June 10 and the second will take place Monday, June 17 at View in Old Forge.

Sponsored by View, singers of all ages are welcome. Classic standard choral works from Handel to the present, including show tunes and patriotic numbers, will be performed.

Rehearsals will be held at 6 p.m. at the following dates and locations: Wednesday, May 1; Monday, May 13; Tuesday, May 28; and Monday June 3 at the Presbyterian Church in Boonville and Mondays, May 6 and 20 at View.

FAA investigating cause of Seventh Lake seaplane accident

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Inlet Police Department personnel responded to a report of a plane crash on Seventh Lake in the Town of Inlet at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23.

Upon arrival at the scene they found that a privately owned seaplane, operated by Thomas Payne, 50, of Old Forge, had crashed while landing on Seventh Lake.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Payne was treated by Inlet EMS and transported to the Old Forge airport where he was met by a LifeNet helicopter for transport to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

After the accident was called in, the Old Forge Fire Department was called to clear the landing zone at the airport for the helicopter. According to Old Forge Fire Chief Charlie Bogardus, the action is standard protocol when a LifeNet helicopter is called in.

The investigation has been turned over to the FAA to determine the cause of the accident.

Town of Webb Police, New York State Police and the Inlet Fire Department assisted at the scene.

View promises artistic surprises when pastel exhibition opens May 4

W-93_Waterfront Cutter_Mariani The 9th Annual Northeast National Pastel Exhibition, which is set to open Saturday, May 4 at View in Old Forge, continues to grow with an array of surprising works, according to View Curator, Linda Weal.

An opening reception with live music is scheduled for Friday, May 3 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Weal likens the growth of the pastel show to that of View’s annual watercolor show.

“Watercolor was really underrepresented, and we found a niche for it here. It worked for us, and for the artists. It was beneficial for everyone,” she said.

Now in its 32 years, the Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors is nationally renowned. Continue reading →

Services set for Roland D. Christy, Sr., 89

Roland Christy Sr.

Roland D. Christy, Sr., 89, of Syracuse and Old Forge passed away peacefully on April 24, 2013 at Upstate Medical Center following a brief illness.

Roland was born the seventh child of William P. and Catherine (Sullivan) Christy on November 3, 1923 in Old Forge, NY.

The family moved to Syracuse in 1936 and Roland graduated from St. Anthony’s High School in 1941. He joined the U.S. Navy at the start of WWII and was selected for officer candidate school. e graduated from the niversity of Richmond Virginia with a degree in chemistry.

Roland married Barbara Tiffany on October 1, 1955 in St Anthony’s Catholic Church in Inlet, NY. e taught science at Cherry Valley High School until May 1963 when Barbara passed away.

He then moved his family to Syracuse and taught science at Onondaga Central School until his retirement in 1982. oland loved teaching chemistry and was presented an excellence in teaching award from the American Chemical Society. He was also the golf coach at Onondaga Central.

During the summer months Roland was the manager of the Inlet Golf Course. He excelled at golf and set course records at the Thendara Golf Club with a 30 on the front and 31 on the back nine.

He founded the Inlet Youth Golf League and gave golf lessons to area youths through September 2012. Continue reading →

Spring has sprung, rush has started at Town of Webb code office

Spring rush

Spring has sprung, with or without all the snow being gone. In the last few weeks the number of building permit applications received in the code office is somewhat overwhelming.

The simpler ones will be reviewed and issued almost on the spot.

But not all are simple, as much as the applicant would like to see.

When submitting an application that includes all the information required, it will go a long ways to expediting the review process; especially applications involving a new house, new structure, addition or major renovation.

Lucky Dogs reopening: How ’bout a side of conversation

Yippee for Spring and all things green! Yay for new life and the final farewell to snow(still have one stubborn roof pile nagging me), and adios to squishy mud.

We have survived yet another winter season, and in an effort to provide comfort to my Lucky Dogs customers we have endured yet another project. Raisin’ the roof—that’s right, this year we can all enjoy the summer months here in Woodgate underneath a delightful new covering that will keep us cool and dry while munching on hot dogs and other goodies.

Trust me, this was no easy project. Mr. Lucky is a dirt guy, but this year he was forced into banging nails over his head. And if it weren’t for our good friends and neighbors our roof would be at ground level. Hey Scotty G., can’t thank you enough for keeping him sane and somewhat grounded, and more importantly, from taking his wife’s life when things got tough. Continue reading →
