Inlet vigil contributes to awareness, supports passage of new legislation

by Margie O’Hara, Guest Contributor

Congratulations to those of you who supported and participated in Inlet’s “Shine a Light on Lung Cancer” vigil last November.

Our small effort, combined with over 250 other small efforts, actually proved that even a few could have a huge impact on our government.

The legislation, which we were hoping and praying for, has been enacted.

Just hours before the end of the 112th Congress (the constitutional deadline for approval of a bill passed by that Congress), President Obama signed into law the first legislation requiring comprehensive plans of research action for high mortality cancers, with lung cancer and pancreatic cancer given priority status for expedited attention.

The final product, the Recalcitrant Cancer Act, represents a compromise worked out between the Congress and the administration on the Pancreatic Cancer Research and Education Act and the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act.

This landmark legislation requires the National Cancer Institute to develop scientific frameworks for addressing cancers with survival rates of less than fifty percent, with first priority attention to lung and pancreatic cancers.

The framework must be sent to Congress within 18 months. Continue reading

January 26 blood drive to aid scholarship effort

Town of Webb School senior Molly Rodriguez is working with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive at the Park Avenue Building gym in Old Forge on Saturday, January 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Blood types usually in greatest demand are A+, AB+ and O-, but all blood types are needed. Rodriguez said the Red Cross is always in need of double red cell donors and recommends eating bread, eggs and/or meat the day before giving blood so that iron counts are high enough to donate.

According to Rodriguez, if she is able to attract 30 more donors than the goal set by the Red Cross, she and the school’s National Honor Society will receive scholarship monies.

She plans on using the scholarship funds to support her tuition to LeMoyne College, where she plans to study nursing in the fall.

Appointments can be scheduled by calling Rodriquez at (315) 369-2244, Bette Pepper at 369-6214, or go to the American Red Cross website. Walk-ins are welcome, however registering ahead of time will save donors a wait.

Card of Thanks

A sincere thank you to the wonderful friends and family members who extended so much kindness after my recent accident.

The cards, food, flowers and messages have been deeply appreciated.

A special note of gratitude to Danny, Leo, Zach and Lisa, the Old Forge Ambulance crew, for their outstanding care and compassion.

There have been so many instances in 2012 that made it necessary to convey thanks to friends and acquaintances for numerous thoughtful acts and words, that it seems somewhat inadequate to relate similar sentiments once again.

However, for lack of better words, thank you.

We are truly fortunate to live in such a caring community.

With sincere regards,

Linda Martin, Old Forge

P.S. ~ Thank you, Kevin, for being a good friend to Lola.

Letter to the Editor: Forestport project stalled

To the Editor:

The Forestport Town Supervisor is blocking construction of the new Twin Bridges by not signing an amendment to the contract.

The people voted on September 18 for a one lane bridge. On December 19th, the Board voted to proceed with Zangrilli’s (the engineering firm) December 17th plan.

The Town’s Attorney has advised him he must sign. Time is of the essence. If the engineers don’t have time to complete our plans and bid documents, we won’t be able to proceed with getting the bridges out for bid on February 1st.

The clock is ticking.

As of January 10th, twenty days will have passed without his signature. This will cost the taxpayers dearly!

The only recourse for the board is to hire an attorney and file an Article 78 for not complying with state law. The board is preparing to do that, but legal action takes time.

This is an outrageous situation. Please monitor the topics and attend the Wednesday, January 16 town board meeting which begins at 6:30 p.m.

Tell your neighbors and friends.

Thank you for your support.

Parker Snead, Forestport

Two photographs by Old Forge photographer Carolynn McCann (Dufft) are currently on display at the downtown Rochester gallery, Image City Photography Gallery.

The 6th annual “The Magic of Life” juried exhibit, which opened January 2, features 176 photographs by 83 artists in a wide range of photographic styles.

During the exhibit’s opening reception it was announced that McCann’s winter scene photograph of The Little Red Boathouse, located on the channel to First Lake, was selected as one of three grand prize winners.

The photo is one of seven featured on the gallery’s website as a preview of the show.

It also appeared in a December 28 article promoting the exhibit in the Time Out section of the Rochester Business Journal.

Having moved to Old Forge in the fourth grade, McCann’s family owned the former McCann’s Corner newsstand, where Ozzie’s Coffee Bar is now located.

Next door lived the late photographer Bill Weedmark whose work inspired her to pursue the art of photography at the Town of Webb School.

She also credits another local photographer, Ted Russell, with inspiring her interest when she was a high school student.

Russell, who at the time worked at the local newspaper, The Adirondack Echo, helped acquaint her with the darkroom, she said. Continue reading
