Bryan Easton and rescue team honored for life saving effort

Oswego firefighter and paramedic Bryan Easton and a team of fellow rescue personnel were recently recognized by the City of Oswego for saving an area man’s life.

It was a rapid heartbeat that caused Oswego resident Jim Favata to go into cardiac arrest in the parking lot of Lowe’s on September 9.

Within five minutes  Easton and his rescue team were on the scene. Favata was on the ground, not breathing and without a pulse.

The team performed CPR and used a defibrillator on Favata. After a few minutes the victim had a pulse back and began breathing.

Favata was transferred by ambulance to Oswego Hospital before being transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse where he remained in a coma for seven days.

When he came out of the coma, one of the first things he said was that he had to meet the guys who saved his life.

Fully recovered, he joined the rescuers at the Oswego Fire Station on December 12 for lunch and to extend his gratitude.

Easton, a 2005 Town of Webb graduate who got his start as a junior firefighter with the Old Forge Fire Department, has been a paramedic for three years.

In May of this year he was named Advanced Life Support Provider of the Year for Oswego County.

He was hired as a paramedic and firefighter for the City of Oswego in July of 2012.

While Easton currently lives in Oswego, when he comes home to Old Forge, he usually has a radio from the fire department on in case there is a call for a paramedic.

Easton is the son of Shelly Madsen of Old Forge and Chuck Easton of Frankfort and the grandson of Gloria and Drew Webster of Eagle Bay.

AEDC receiving $2M funds to help with Adirondack business climate

In round two of the Regional Economic Development Council Awards, Governor Cuomo announced that the Adirondack Economic Development Corporation, Inc. will receive $2 million for the formation of an AEDC Community Transformation Tourism Fund.

The Adirondack Economic Development Council will manage the fund with the intent to award grants or loans to businesses throughout the Adirondack Park that rely on tourism for their livelihood.

Such businesses include campsites, restaurants, motels, and retail stores, among others. Funds will be considered through an application process, much like Main Street Grant funding, said Nick Rose, executive director of CAP-21.

Potential funds are available to assist a business with necessary improvements or building repairs that will help keep them afloat.

Athletes who play on Vassar College’s Gordon Field know how hard the grounds crew works to maintain one of the finest playing fields in the country. Now, the team that makes it happen, headed by Anne Beckingham of Old Forge, has received national recognition for its efforts.

The Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) has named Gordon Field the “College and University 2012 Soccer Field of the Year.”

Vassar’s Prentiss Complex, a total of 15+ acres of sports turf, includes three practice soccer fields, a competition soccer field, baseball fields, an artificial turf field with full track surrounding it and a rugby field.

Beckingham and her colleagues also maintain approximately 10 km of cross-country trails, two faculty housing properties and two acres of student housing.

“It’s an outstanding accomplishment for a small, but efficient crew,” said Beckingham, who is the Supervisor of Athletic Fields for Building and Grounds.

“I am very proud of the great team that works on all of the Vassar fields. These guys put their hearts and souls into the fields.”

She credits the Vassar soccer coaches and players with respecting the fields and being good stewards of them.  Continue reading

Inlet Barnstormers club educates 1,000th snowmobile safety student

Snodeo weekend marked a milestone for the Inlet Barnstormers Snowmobile Club, as their list of snowmobile safety students educated through their Snowmobile Safety Course program grew to over 1,000.

The snowmobile club offered its first New York State Snowmobile Safety Course in December 1999 at the Old Forge Fire House.

Area residents Jeff and Phoebe Greene, Ron and Sandy Nihill, Bob and Linda Gordon, and Sandy Richardson were the first five New York Snowmobile Safety Course instructors certified in the area.

Each snowmobile safety instructor must be certified by the state of New York to teach in the classroom and must go through an application process with the Snowmobiling Unit of the New York Parks and Recreation Department.

A safety course must then be completed and followed by assisting in two eight-hour courses before being approved by the office of the snowmobile unit.

Each instructor must teach a minimum of one course per two years in order to keep his or her certification.

Because of the number of courses being given across the state, the Barnstormers are currently accepting both youth and adult registrants.  Continue reading
