Thank you supporters of final T.H.E. Loop

The 7th Annual T.H.E. Loop was held on Saturday, October 6th despite—once again—less than favorable weather! While there were only six motorcycles, there were 28 enthusiastic participants who decided to “loop” on foot around the Mt. Sabattis Pavilion to honor people who have faced the diagnosis of cancer.

This was the last year for T.H.E. Loop so it was appropriate to include all riders and non-riders to be part of the event. In the course of the past seven rides T.H.E. Loop has raised over $36,000 for local treatment centers…100% of the monies going to help all cancer patients. That is what always made T.H.E. Loop unique.

T.H.E. Loop proved that one can make a difference in their own backyard…and it is with sincere gratitude that I thank everyone who helped, supported, and promoted this event to accomplish making a difference.

Mary Lamphear,

Raquette Lake T.H.E. Loop organizer

Keep your home safe this winter by observing heating tips

by Jason Pallotta, Inlet Fire Dept., Assistant Chief

I know most of you enjoyed a beautiful, warm summer and early fall, but winter is just around the corner and we are now firing up our heating sources for the cold months ahead.

So, I would like to share some statistics and tips about heating your home this winter.

In a study conducted between 2008 and 2010, an estimated 50,100 heating fires in residential buildings occurred in the United States in each of those years resulting in an annual average of 150 deaths, 575 injuries, and $326 million in property damage.

The study showed that cooking was the number one cause of residential building fires, with heating coming in second.

Residential building heating fires peaked in the early evening hours between 5 and 9 p.m. with the highest peak between 6 and 8 p.m.

That 4-hour period accounted for 30 percent of all residential building heating fires. Confined fires—those fires confined to chimneys, flues, or fuel burners—accounted for 87 percent of residential building heating fires. Thirty percent of the non-confined residential building heating fires occurred because the heat source was too close to combustibles.

Now that you are aware of the statistics of home heating fires, here are some tips to help you avoid being party to one. Continue reading

Christmas on Main Street: Entries sought for Nov. 23rd Light Parade

The Old Forge Adirondack Christmas on Main Street Committee is seeking entries for this year’s Light Parade which will take place on Friday, November 23 at 6:30 p.m.

Participants can begin lining up at the Town of Webb UFSD bus circle at 6 p.m.

The parade will head down Main Street and end at Point Park where the Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held.

Chip Kiefer, one of the parade coordinators, encourages the same spirit of participation that can be seen at the iconic Old Forge St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

“We don’t want people to think they can’t participate because they don’t have the time to pull together an ornate, lighted float.

Our goal is to brighten up Main St. in a procession of lights and let the spirit of the holiday shine. And much like the St. Paddy’s parade—the zanier and more imaginative the better,” Kiefer said. Continue reading
