Please remember to support our neighboring ambulance services

To the Editor:

In June I was diagnosed with acute appendicitis at the Town of Webb Health Center.

The Old Forge Ambulance was unable to respond, but within the hour Inlet Volunteer Ambulance arrived and transported me to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Utica.

Without the efforts of the Inlet Ambulance, especially driver Bob Gordon and EMT Sarah Dew, I might have died.

Sarah drove in from Big Moose to answer the call, and Bob picked her up in Eagle Bay on the way to rescue me.

My family and I are so grateful to everyone who helped me survive the rupture of my appendix.

As a resident of Old Forge, I had not thought to support the Inlet Volunteer Ambulance.

Now I urge residents and visitors to support all our local volunteer services with your donations.

This time my gratitude and my check are sent to Inlet.

Thank you,

Thea Martin, Old Forge

Letter to the Editor: Fourth Lake Property Owners Assn. to hold annual meeting, August 11th

To the Editor:

The annual meeting of the Fourth Lake Property Owners Association will be held on August 11th at 10 a.m., at the Inlet Town Hall, and all are welcome.

This year has seen the completion of the dock at Woods Inn, which the Fourth Lake Property Owners Association had a small hand in moving forward.

For several years we have been strong advocates of rebuilding the dock in its historic form, both as a navigational safety measure and as a boon to the local economy.

FLPOA president, George Spoll, wrote letters to the APA not only to support the dock itself but also for the gazebo and the roof on the gazebo, which APA was reluctant to authorize.  The entire pier now nearly replicates the original structure of 60 or 70 years ago, and the tour boat has a docking place in Inlet.

FLPOA had large turnouts in the past two years for our presentation “Strategies to Avoid a House Divided” (how to pass your property to the next generations).  We will not reprise that offering this year but, if there appears to be a need, may offer something similar in the future.

Financially FLPOA is in good shape. The FLPOA account has a respectable war chest. This money is for contingencies in case we need to do battle to protect the area we all love.

The Lighthouse Endowment fund has just over $50,000. This figure is insufficient to make the lighthouse self-sustaining, aggravated by prevailing low interest rates, but it is a healthy start.

In the past we have had two silent art auctions (which seem to have become all the rage for other non-profits).  For next year we would like to hold an auction (part silent, part with an auctioneer) of antiques.

Other than that, we are, of course, keeping an eye on the Holl’s Inn property and doing our best to keep the lighthouse working.

Jim Hershel, FLPOA, Inlet

Service being planned for Janette Walley, 85

Janette Ann Walley passed away peacefully on Monday, August 6, 2012 while benefiting from the compassionate care of the Sunset Nursing Home staff in Boonville, NY.

In her final hours, she was surrounded by several close family members who offered their love and appreciation for the impact she had on their lives.

Janette was a caring, thoughtful, and loving wife, mother, and grandmother who provided tremendous wisdom and guidance for all.

Her wry sense of humor and down-to-earth practicality were trademark qualities as well.

She enjoyed home improvement projects, crocheting, traveling, reading, and was a devout Catholic.

The two greatest joys in her life, however, were her grandchildren and poodles.

Born Janette Ann Yacobelli on December 28, 1926 in Utica, NY to Guy and Catherine Yacobelli, she went on to graduate from Proctor High School in 1945.

Like many of her generation, she survived numerous hardships. Among those was the loss of her mother and a life-threatening case of rheumatic fever, both occurring in her early years.

That early adversity was soon followed, though, by what she would often describe as her single fondest memory: meeting her one true love, Charles (Chuck) Walley.

The newlyweds began their storybook lives together in Syracuse, NY before moving to the ranch house that they would call home for more than forty years in Rochester (East Irondequoit), NY.

Janette had very few regrets in her life, but would occasionally express some degree of disappointment that she hadn’t followed a youthful dream of becoming an attorney.

Of course, few women attended college in that era and, ultimately, she chose the more traditional path of wife and mother.   Continue reading
