St. E’s: No stranger to Regional health needs

St. Elizabeth’s hospital has been around since 1866, and is no stranger to health care in the area, according to Robert Scholefield, its Chief Operating Officer.

“We have 14 physician offices throughout Oneida/ Herkimer County. We have a combination of inner city, suburban and rural health care clinics. We employ over 60 physicians throughout those clinics, and we’ve been doing that since 1975—so it’s not something new for us,” he said. Continue reading

New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli paid a visit to the Central Adirondacks on Friday, May 11 at the request of the Adirondack Landowners Association’s President, Tom Williams.

The visit, Williams said, was the result of a year long effort between the ALA and the Comptroller’s office to educate elected and appointed officials in Albany, as well as the general public, about the unique contributions private land owners make and to help them understand the potential environmental detriment of future legislative decisions.

In 2011, the Comptroller’s Office first met with the ALA for a presentation on an ALA initiative regarding the spread of invasive species.

“Our presentation was simple,” Williams said, “ It’s a lot cheaper to prevent it than it is to clean it up afterwards.”

The initiative at this meeting, however, focused on the relationship that private landowners and organizations such as the ALA have with the Adirondacks on economic, environmental, and emotional levels and what happens when these partnerships begin to disappear. Continue reading

Standard Use & Conditional Use: Getting to know two important terms

Application Deadlines

As in any type of project, planning ahead is always critical. Depending on the type and nature of a project will depend on the approval process involved by the town.

In the Town of Webb there are “standard uses” and “conditional uses.”

One is acceptable, the other potentially acceptable.

An example of a standard use would be the permitting process to build a house.

In all Zoning District classifications except OS Zones [open space], to obtain a building permit to build a house does not require any approval other than building permit issued through the Code Office.

Of course the normal plans, surveys, site location plan, and septic system design may need to be submitted to the Code Office.

However, there is no automatic need for any Planning Board review.

Thus the term “standard use.” Continue reading

Student Ambassador Yuhasz thanks community for trip support

I would like to thank the community for their support of my recent People to People trip to China. Many people helped support my fundraising events so I could afford to go on this once in a lifetime trip.

The trip went from July 9 to 25th. I went with a group of 47 student ambassadors and four chaperones. Our first stop was Beijing. Here we saw Tiananmen Square where students stood up against the government many years ago.

We also walked on the Great Wall. The Great Wall was amazing to see because every interval of climbing there was a watch tower. Continue reading
