Be aware of Holiday Heart Syndrome as you celebrate this holiday season

In the United States someone has a heart attack every thirty seconds. While the most likely time to have a heart attack might be Monday morning, you might consider the following before tipping your glass this holiday season.

Between Christmas and New Year’s each year millions of hospital admissions result from what we might jokingly call the holiday heart syndrome.

This syndrome is especially common in individuals who use alcohol or other drugs such as marijuana around the holidays.

Disguised in medical terms like “angina, myocardial infarction, presyncope, or atrial fibrillation” the holiday heart syndrome is primarily as result of four factors.

These include, stress, alcohol, added salt intake, and dietary over-indulgence. Continue reading

Local photographer Lubbs impresses in current View exhibit

The names Battaglia, Farb, Heilman, and Bowie are recognizable throughout the Adiron-dacks as the most celebrated photographers in the region. Their work can be seen at View’s current exhibit, View Finders.

But among the photographs of these masters are the works of some newer voices in Adirondack photography, and of note is the landscape and nature photography of Clark Lubbs.

Lubbs, co-founder of Starving Artists Gallery at the busy corner in Old Forge, has been a professional photographer for more than 25 years.

He is a charter member and leader of the Old Forge Camera Club, and has also taught photography for a number of years.

Lubbs said he is very big on composition, which is one of the techniques he not only uses in his own work, but also shares with his students. Continue reading

Kiwanis Christmas for Kids another success

Each year the Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks collects and distributes gifts and toys to special families in the Woodgate, Thendara, and Old Forge, Eagle Bay, and Inlet area.

Diane Amos, Town of Webb School, Key Club and Builders Club Advisor with some of the students that assisted with the Christmas for Kids Gift Wrapping Party.

In 2011, this very worthwhile program provided gifts and toys to 98 children in 52 families. The distribution included over 300 gifts, theatre tickets, knitted articles, a book, a jar of peanut butter and a ham for each family. Gifts were also provided to the Otter Lake Fire Department for their fire truck Santa distribution program.

This year Kiwanis again partnered with the Marine Corps League Toys for Tots Program, which greatly helped in providing the appropriate gifts for all ages of children.

Gift and toy collection locations were located at Adirondack Bank, Brooker True Value Hardware, Community Bank, Dan’s Big M, George’s Thing, Inlet Department Store (ACE), Kinney Drugs, Old Forge Department Store (ACE), Smith Marine and Old Forge Hardware. Continue reading

Local furniture drive for Schoharie Valley flood victims ends in success

The Free & Accepted Masons from North Woods Lodge #849 in Old Forge wish to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to all who donated furniture and/or appliances to help those in need after the floods earlier this year.

Many people have lost so much, some have lost everything.

A special “thank you” to Michelle and Steve at North-South Connection Trailer Sales and to Tom and Lori of Wilderness Interiors for the generous use of your trailers.

Without the use of your trailers, we would not have been able to deliver. When asked, they both said ‘yes’ without hesitation.

200 children enjoy Kiwanis-sponsored holiday film

Close to 200 area children enjoyed free admittance to the film, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, on Saturday, December 17 at the Strand Theatre in Old Forge.

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks, in cooperation  with Bob Card and Helen Zyma, owners of the Strand, were sponsors of the event.

The children were also treated to a free popcorn and drink, and enjoyed a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The Kiwanis Club wishes to thank all those in the community who so generously contribute to the various fund raising events that make programs such as this possible.

Library Elves host family Christmas Party

Children and adults filled the Old Forge Library on Tuesday evening, December 20, for the Christmas Party hosted by Library Elves, Jingle Belle and Snowflake.

It featured a craft table for making Christmas ornaments, a reading of “The Night Before Christmas,” by Key Club member Colin Criss, and a performance of the play, “A Christmas Tree for Kitty.”

The cast included Sarah Beck, Fern Bick, Rianna Lindsay, Bella Beck, Chelsea Clark, and Grace Heath, with Chloe and Charlotte Clark, Alexis Heath, Trinity Liddle and Robin Smith as the carolers.

Music was provided by pianist, Maureen Van Slyke.

Hot chocolate and cookies were served following the performance.

Barnstormers Family Picnic set Jan. 7th

The Inlet Barnstormers Snowmobile Club is planning a family picnic at Red River in the Moose River Plains for Saturday, January 7.

Participants can meet at the Ole Barn parking lot on Limekiln Road at noon.

In case of bad weather or lack of snow, the picnic will be held at 1 p.m. at the Inlet Emergency Services Building on the corner of Route 28 and Limekiln Road.

All are asked to bring a dish to pass.
