Winners named for 2011 Antique/Classic Boat Show

A brand new dock welcomed 57 antique boats to the 21st annual Antique Boat Show on the Old Forge waterfront on Saturday, July 9.

Boats traveled from as far as Florida, Virginia and Maryland as well as all over New York state to participate in the show.

Perfect weather helped make it an enjoyable and successful event for participants and observers alike.

Hoofbeats in the Adirondacks: 200 enjoy equestrian variety show

Hoofbeats in the Adirondacks” was held Thursday afternoon, July 7th, under a perfect blue sky at Moose River Farm in Old Forge.

A variety of equestrian performances set to moving music transformed the training facility into a sunlit theater.

A crowd of over 200 spectators was treated to a variety of horse-themed acts that included a military-style Quadrille, a Friesian Duet and a unique combination of choreography between a horse, rider and dancer. Continue reading

McCauley Mtn. Music Fest organizers seeking vendors for August 6th show

Preparations for the 2nd Annual McCauley Mountain Music Festival are well on their way and vendor applications are now available at A Sweet Car Named Desire and Souvenir Village in the center of Old Forge.

Vendor passes are $100 and include two free tickets to the festival.

This year’s festival is scheduled for Saturday, August 6 and will be headlined by three-time platinum recording artists, 10,000 Maniacs.

Returning to the festival for the second year are local favorites The Nards featuring Paul Case.

Other performers include Jamie Notarthomas and Jon Liebing, with more acts to be announced soon.

The 2nd Annual McCauley Mountain Music Festival will take place from 2 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $25, with on-site camping included in the price.

Tickets are available online through the festival website: mccauleymusicfest.com, or at A Sweet Car Named Desire and Souvenir Village. Tickets can also be purchased at the McCauley Mountain gate the day of the show.

Last July 4th weekend was interesting to say the least. Here in the Code Office, complaints started flowing in on Wednesday the 29th of June—just before the rush of the weekend.

Not only was the office dealing with dozens of building permit applications (in anticipation of a long weekend), we were flooded with complaints about neighbors against neighbors.

All kinds of complaints; junk, tall grass, clotheslines, noise, parking of cars, boats blocking docks, trespassing, peeing over the edge of boats, campfires, hammering early in the morning, overcrowding of houses, unsafe rental units, sewage in basements at a business, and signs—oh boy, were there complaints about signs, especially through the business district in Old Forge. Letter to the Editor: Homeowners need fair taxation: Circuit-breaker offers true relief

To the Editor:

Governor Andrew Cuomo should lead with an equitable tax policy for all New Yorkers.

New York state homeowners will learn soon enough that unless Albany accompanies the tax levy cap with true local tax relief, and seriously addresses mandates and other sources of rising costs, the only way is out—out of New York.

We ask the governor and our legislators to pay for circuit-breaker relief with extension of the “millionaire’s tax” on true millionaires. Continue reading

VIEW: Antique Show set for next weekend

The Arts Center/Old Forge will present the 37th Annual Antique Show and Sale in Old Forge on Saturday and Sunday, July 23 and 24 at the George T. Hiltebrant Recreation Center on North Street.

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Over 60 dealer booths will be featured, displaying a variety of antiques, collectibles, books, jewelry and nostalgic memorabilia.

Food will be available for purchase on-site both days.

Admission fee is $6 and good for entry both days. Proceeds will benefit View, the new arts center in Old Forge.

Transportation available from View for two Glimmerglass performances

View, the new arts center in Old Forge, is offering limited tickets for bus tours to the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown.

The tour includes theatre seats, roundtrip bus rides from Old Forge, and a box lunch for $65 (a $160 value).

The first trip is scheduled for Tuesday, August 2 for a performance of “Annie Get Your Gun”. Another trip will be on Tuesday, August 23 to see the opera, “Carmen”.

Buses will leave View at 9:30 a.m. for the 1:30 p.m. matinee performance. They will return to Old Forge at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Lunch will be available at the Thaw Pavilion at 11:30 a.m., followed by a staff-led insightful preview of the performance.

Reservations for either trip and performance can be made by calling View at (315) 369 6411.

Anyone who has already purchased a ticket for the Tuesday matinee of either Annie Get Your Gun or Carmen through the Glimmerglass box office who would like to ride on the View bus can call the above number to make arrangements. There will be an additional fee for the service.
