View and Five Corners Café to team for night of Indian music, dining

“The mood of both pieces in which the Tabla player, Mr.Khan was involved was predominantly exuberant…at one point he could be heard echoing on the larger of his two drums the melodic ideas taught to him by his father, perfectly tuned simply by the pressure of his hands.”

Shafaat Khan

Maestro Ustad Shafaat Khan, a world-renowned classical Indian musician, is scheduled to perform at View in Old Forge on Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m., joined by two other musicians.

View’s Performing Arts Program Manager Alan Saban has made special arrangements with Paul and Kathy Rivet of Five Corners Café to serve an Indian dinner the night of the performance.

There will be two dinner seatings at Five Corners, one at 5:30 p.m. and a second at 8:30 p.m. This will allow concert-goers to dine either before or after the 7 p.m. concert.

The Old Forge performance is part of a tour in which New York City-based Khan and his fellow musicians will also play in Homer, Long Lake and North Creek.

Khan has performed world-wide since age 11, at prestigious concert halls, music festivals and universities in Asia, Europe and North America.

He’s played for national leaders and shared a stage with the likes of Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder.

Khan has performed benefit concerts for causes that include tsunami and flood victims, battered women, children with disabilities and world peace efforts.

He is the first known musician to master the sitar, surbahar and tabla.

Khan is the son of Maestro Ustad Imrat Khan and nephew of the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan.

He is a protégé of tabla player Ustad Ibrahim Khan.

The state of Pennsylvania presented Khan with a Professional Excel-lence Award, recognizing him as an outstanding musician, performer and teacher.

Five Corners Café’s menu for this evening will include a choice of appetizer: Chana Masala with Chicken (chick peas, onions, tomatoes, Indian spices and chilis with chicken) or Vegetable Samosas (potato and pea baked pastry with cilantro chutney)

There is also a choice of main course: Phanna Upkari – Salmon Vindaloo with Basmati rice and curried carrots; or Tandoori Lamb with gobi aloo (cauliflower and potatoes) and saag paneer (sautéed spinach with paneer cheese).

All meals will be served with naan (crisp Indian flat bread) and cucumber raita, with wine and beer available. Dinner reservations can be made by calling View at 369-6411, or online at www.viewarts.org. Information about the concert is also available at View.
