Town of Webb Board of Education meets on October 2nd

The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education held a meeting on Tuesday, October 2, at 6:30 p.m., where it took action that is summarized in the following capsule, which does not constitute the board’s approved minutes.

Public Forum:

a. Ms. Nahor expressed condolences to the Leach family on the passing of Dorothy Leach.

b. Sharon Evans attended a mandated seminar and gained insight into the process of governance in regard to the Board of Education.

c. Jennifer Dunn, District Treasurer reported on the tax collection Also, reported on small claims assessments and 2011- 2012 audit. After review of calendars the Audit Committee will gather on October 11th or 12th for a meeting to review the 2011- 12 audit.

The Board of Education took the following action:Approved the Minutes of September 18, 2012 Approved the Warrants and Claims. Approved the Treasurer’s Report for August 2012 Approved the Committee on Special Education Recommendations. Appointed winter coaches for  2012-2013 school year. Boys Varsity Basketball: Nate Smith, 5th year, $4,835 Boys JV Basketball: Andrew Kalil, 18th year, $3,516 Boys Modified Basketball: Greg Clark, 3rd year, $1,759 Girls Varsity Volleyball: Jessica Brownsell, 4th year, $4,395 Girls JV Volleyball: Kristen Armendola, 5th year, $3,516 Girls Varsity Basketball: Travis Kiefer, 2nd year, $3,956 Alpine Skiing: Tom Down, 4th year, $4,835 Nordic Skiing: John Leach, Top step, $4,835

Approved the revised Board Policies: 501.1 – Student Attendance: Records and Accounting; 501.3 – Student Attendance: Vacationing When School Is In Session; 503. – School-Parent Relations; 503.3 – Adults Visiting The School; 504.5 – Substance Use/Abuse Policy.

Approved the 2012 -2013 Board Goals:

1. Education: The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education strives for the best possible education for our students.

Goals:

• To improve student achievement and academic performance toward college and career readiness.

• To explore course offerings targeting student’s post-secondary successes.

• Strive to increase 4-8 students’ individual scale scores by 3 points.

• Strive to increase the percentage of students achieving mastery level on all Regents exams.

2. Environment: The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education strives to maintain a safe, nurturing, healthy, positive, welcoming environment for students, parents, employees, and community members.

Goals:

• To increase/improve the school’s positive climate as reported by increased positive feedback from students, parents, employees, and community members.

• Gather baseline data on facility usage.

3. Finance: The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education strives to maintain fiscal integrity and responsibility to the taxpayers of the district.

Goals:

• To develop, present to the public, and gain adoption of a 2013-2014 district budget that addresses the educational needs of our students, complies with state guidelines, and is fiscally responsible to the taxpayers of our district.

• To review our Auditing procedures with recommendations made before budget adoption.

4. Administration: The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education strives to provide appropriate management of school function.

Goals:

• To develop the framework for a district long-range plan by the end of the 2013-2014 year including but not limited to: impact/ reaction to state guidelines on budget growth, availability of classes, staffing benchmarks, bus purchases, capital improvements, identified needs in the areas of operations and maintenance.

• Before budget adoption, develop a framework for scenarios related to district finances

• Approved additional classroom volunteers.

• Appointed Wende Carr as Substitute Teacher at the rate of $80/day and as Substitute Teacher Aide at the rate of $9.75/hour.

Special Topic: The Board Reviewed: Board Policy Section 505 -516.

Principal’s Report submitted regarding:

• Observations of teachers will begin this month and continue throughout the year.

• The fire drills for the year are complete and were successfully conducted during each part of student’s schedules.

• A lock-down drill was conducted and the K-9 Unit was brought in. Thank you to the Inlet and Old Forge Police Departments for their help with this.

• Rachel’s Challenge was held on Wednesday, September 26, during the day for students and at 6:30 p.m. for parents and the community. This was a great presentation that was linked to the new DASA requirements.

• Pre-assessment Tasks will be taking place this week before our Superintendent’s Conference Day on Friday. Teachers will be working with this data to develop their Student Learning Objectives for this year.

• The Fall Ball took place this past weekend at the Thendara Golf Club with over 100 students attending.

• The Columbus Day Weekend festivities will begin with a Fairy- Tale Float Theme Parade on Friday at 3:45 pm leaving from the school parking lot. Judging is at 3:30 pm.

• The Dancing Wheels Assembly will take place this week for 7th-9th graders to increase their awareness of students with disabilities.

• Student Council took a field trip to Camp Gorham to enhance their leadership qualities. Mr. Jed Kinney and Mr. Mark Johnston conducted the field trip.

Superintendent’s Report included the topics:

• The APPR negotiations group met on Monday and is progressing.

• There is no new information in regards to the preliminary request by VIEW to have their annual craft fair on school property.

• Staff development day on Friday will have components related to Student Learning Objective development and Technology Training.

• New Law books have been ordered for Board members.

• Paperwork has been submitted with BOCES and the State regarding “incidental teaching.” This is teaching that is being done outside of the certification area of the teacher. We will be sending notes home, in compliance with Federal Regulations, making parents aware that 5 of our teachers are teaching a class outside of their certification.

• Discussed Indoor Track.

• Discussed the joint dinner with the Inlet Board of Education.

• Policy review will take place at the next meeting with a review of section 400’s.

Mr. Germer conducted a tour of the building highlighting the improvements made over the summer break.

On Tuesday, October 16 at 6:30 p.m. the next regular meeting is scheduled in the Library.
