U.S. News ranks Town of Webb among top schools in state, nation

The Town of Webb Junior-Senior High School in Old Forge is one of three area schools that were ranked in the top 130 in New York state, according to the U.S. News and World Report’s 2012 list of Best High Schools.

According to the report, the Town of Webb School was ranked 90th out of 667 schools in the state and 713th out of 22,000 schools in the nation.

The other area schools that made the list of Best High Schools were Lowville Academy, ranking 69th in the state and 498th in the nation, and Hamilton Junior-Senior High School, ranking 130th in the state and 979th in the nation. The rankings were determined in three steps: If student performance was better than statistically expected for the average student in the state; if the school passed round one, then the schools’ least-advantaged students were studied to see if they were performing better than average for similar students in the state; and the final step was to assess Advanced Placement test data for college-readiness to determine how the school prepares students for passing college-level coursework.

According to the study, the student body is 53 percent male and 47 percent female, with 42% of Town of Webb School students participating in Advanced Placement (AP) coursework and exams.

“It’s nice recognition for both our staff and our students and the commitment of the community to education. It’s good recognition for this little town,” said Town of Webb School Superintendent Rex Germer.

Germer added that he was also very pleased with the results of the School Budget vote on Tuesday, May 15th.

“I’m extremely happy with the community support. Again, they really stand by what we are doing here, what we’re doing for students, and what the school is able to offer,” he said.
