Letter to Editor: Satellite phone would help on the sled trails

Dear Editor:

Mr. Fortuna would have us all pay for what ultimately is his own responsibility– the safety of himself and his son while participating in a sport that, by its very nature, takes place in the wilderness and can be very dangerous when using too much throttle and not enough caution/common sense. While I feel great compassion for what he must have emotionally experienced at the time his son ran his sled into a tree and was seriously injured, I also know from 26 years of riding in Alaska and New York how this accident happened.

His son was riding too fast and did not have the skill and/or experience to hold the trail in the turn causing him to leave the trail at high speed and hit the tree.

From his comments posted in the Weekly Adirondack, I think Mr. Fortuna can afford to and should consider buying a personal satellite phone so that he can be assured of reaching EMS personnel the next time.
