Webb school boys & girls sports teams battle to mixed finishes in opening 2012

In an away game on Wednesday, January 4, the Eskimo’s were upended by Rome Catholic by a score of 62 to 23, but bright spots were Greg Hunkins, who played well scoring 11 points, and Kenny Pastore with a three-pointer, free throw and field goal. Other scorers were Parker Clemans, Dane Daiker, and Kody Earl.

On Saturday, January 7 crowds gathered in the TOW School gym for the boys game against Oppienhuim-Ephratah.

Despite the ultimate loss (53-34) attendees were treated to Greg Hunkins’s 21 points. Other contributors were Ethan Kress with 6, Parker Clemans with 5, and Kenny Pastore with 3 points respectively.

The boys may have had a rocky start to 2012, but that all changed on January 11 when they faced Owen D. Young at Webb’s home court. The boys put on quite a show on their way to a 51 to 48 win.

Calvin Risley had 14 points and Ethan Kress, 13, in leading the Eskimos to victory.

Seven seemed to be the varsity boys’ lucky number that night as Dane Daiker, Parker Clemans and Greg Hunkins all tipped in seven to help seal the win.

The boys’ teams will travel to New York Mills on Friday, January 13. The jayvee game starts at 6 p.m. and the varsity game will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Girls Volleyball

The Girls Varsity Volleyball Team has also had quite a start to the new year.

In a game against Sau-quoit on January 4, the girls showed their skills throughout the four games and, while they rallied hard, they were ultimately defeated.

Jessica Menges had seven aces, eight kills and seven digs. Alex Levi helped her team out with five kills and five digs, as did Daria Orekhov’s 15 assists, and a well rounded performance by Hallie Christodaro.

The JV squad also faced Sauquoit, and were defeated 2-0.

Despite the losses, the girls jumped back into action at home on Tuesday, January 8 against Westmoreland.

The varsity girls started the evening by winning the first game 25–18 and after losing the next two, 18 and 19 to 25, respectively, the girls came back to win the next two, bringing their overall score to Old Forge 3 and Westmoreland 2.

With twenty kills between them, the girls performed well.

Leading her team in assists, Daria Orekhov was essential to the end score.

Other standout contributors were Jessica Menges with six aces, Orekhov with two, Alex Levi with two aces, seven digs and six kills. Hallie Christodaro added three kills and an ace.

The girls basketball teams will travel to Adirondack Central on Friday, January 13. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m.
