Thendara Club team takes 2011 Roland Christy Cup championship

The Roland Christy Cup Golf Tournament was held Sunday, September 25 at the Thendara Golf Club under sunny skies.

The annual golf competition was established in 1998 as a friendly annual tournament between the Thendara and Inlet Golf Clubs in recognition of the decades of dedication to both clubs by Roland Christy, the pro of the Inlet club. “It was a fantastic day and the course was in beautiful shape,” said Thendara assistant pro Mike Beck, who shot a 69 the day of the tournament.

Thendara was the winner of the cup in this year’s match-up with a score of 7 to 5.In the fourteen years of the tournament, Thendara has taken the cup eight times and Inlet six times. The tournament will be played at Inlet next year.

Following the match-play event, the two teams met at The Grill Room where Thendara Golf Club President George Hiltebrant accepted the Christy Cup from Roger Lind, owner of the Inlet Golf Club. Following, all enjoyed dinner prepared by Jim Holt’s staff.

Due to illness, Roland, 87, was unable to attend the tournament, but he expressed his appreciation for the continued friendly participation of the two clubs. Roland, an Old Forge native, is a ten-time Thendara Club champion and is marking his 39th year as Inlet’s head pro.
