Area communities partner on Great Adirondack Garage Sale

Plans are underway to coordinate community-wide garage sales over Memorial Day weekend through-out the Adirondacks with Old Forge and Inlet having been established as gateway communities for this “Great Adirondack Garage Sale.”

Inlet Tourism Director Adele Burnett and Town of Webb Tourism Director Mike Farmer met in Long Lake with other organizers on Wednesday, March 30, to further advance a garage sale trail throughout the Adirondacks and beyond.

The Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) is coordinating the program, which was proposed last summer by ROOST director Jim McKenna of Lake Placid.

McKenna brought together tourism representatives to discuss the possibilities of developing the program, following the example of wine trails and farmers’ market trails.

“Our promotion of community garage sales generated by far the most responses we’ve ever had,” said McKenna.

“We can consolidate our efforts and encourage visitors to travel the Great Adirondack Garage Sale trail, staying overnight and shopping throughout the weekend.”

The 200-mile trail, following NYS Routes 28, 28N, and 30, will link Old Forge, Inlet, Raquette Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, Indian Lake, Speculator, Long Lake, Newcomb, Tupper Lake, Lake Clear, Paul Smiths and Malone.

ROOST is launching GreatAdirondackGarageSale
.com in April, with a map and links to each community.

Community representatives may then post their individual community maps. Facebook and other social media as well as posters will be utilized for promotion.

“Webb traditionally has the most participation with about 40 sites in Old Forge alone,” Mike Farmer said.

Old Forge and Inlet will be the first stop for people traveling north, he added.

“We’re the same location for people traveling from Central, Southern and Western New York, and we stand to benefit greatly from widespread promotion by ROOST.”

Registration is underway in Old Forge and Inlet, and those wishing to be included are encouraged to contact the visitor information centers.
