Light snowfall, thaw conditions force early closure of area snowmobile trails

The Town of Webb Snowmobile Trail System was officially closed for the season Thursday, March 10, 2016.

Normally, the season runs from early December until the end of March. However, lack of snow this season delayed riding until mid-January, and conditions have recently deteriorated severely, according to Town of Webb Tourism Director.

“The preparation by trail maintenance crews got us up and running immediately when we first received snow. Skillful grooming with minimum coverage produced a solid base which lasted a long time. Many of the interior trails have remnants of that still, but conditions are now unsafe,” Farmer said.

He added that some diehard snowmobilers were riding as recently as last weekend.

“Two different groups reported riding 40 to 100 miles, but it had to be very tough going.

For weeks, riders have been struggling to get some riding in this season.

Although trails were rideable, there’s been no snow for lubrication or cooling.”

At the Inlet monthly board meeting on Tuesday, March 8, Supervisor John Frey said most snowmobile trails in the area were closed pending adequate snow coverage.

According to Town of Webb Chief Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator John Mitchell, who also keeps weather records for the town, seasonal snowfall as of March 3 is 72.0”.
