It’s been 20 years since Letty Haynes of Inlet wrote her children’s book, “A Rock in My Pocket,” but one thing was keeping her in the way of having it published: finding the perfect illustrator.
After a multi-year search she finally found Maggie Henry, an artist who illustrated “A Coming of Winter in the Adirondacks” and “Forest Green: A Walk Through the Adirondack Seasons.” She captured the images exactly the way Letty envisioned.
“I knew what I wanted and was fussy about how it should be illustrated. Maggie did a beautiful job!” Letty said.
With all components in place, the book was just released.
Letty, who recently turned 89, explained her inspiration for “A Rock in My Pocket” on the book’s jacket: “I taught young children in public schools for over 25 years.
They often brought small treasures to show or give me. Over the years, pretty stones were by far the most frequent gift.
Their fascination with stones inspired me to write this story.”
The book is currently available locally at The Adirondack Reader in Inlet and Old Forge Hardware.
Book signing events are scheduled for Saturday, November 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Inlet Library, and on Saturday, November 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
