Peter E. McCarthy II, 76 of Holland Patent passed away September 29, 2015 at Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare with his loving family by his side.

Peter was born November 5, 1938 in Utica to the late Peter E. and Mary Malone McCarthy. He graduated from Holland Patent School in 1956.

Peter was united in marriage to Sharon Farrell on June 19, 1965 at St. Leo’s Church in Holland Patent and were fortunate to share 50 wonderful years together.

At the tender age of 13, Peter started working weekends and school vacations for his father in the family owned business, Oneida County Rural Telephone Company based in Holland Patent.

Peter was Vice President and the outside plant manager when he retired in 1996 after 45 years of service.

Peter enlisted in the United States Army and served his country for two years. He was an active member of the Holland Patent Fire Company for many years.

As a car enthusiast, Peter loved taking his ’57 Ford Thunderbird and ’34 Ford pickup truck to car shows, often winning People’s Choice or 1st Place trophies.

During the winter months after he retired, Peter volunteered for Habitat for Humanity having helped build 16 homes in the area.

During the summer months he was a full-time volunteer for 20 years on the maintenance crew for the Adirondack Scenic Railroad in Old Forge.

He dearly loved both of his retirement jobs.

Peter was very committed to the organizations he belonged to. He was a past President of the White Lake Game Club, present Vice President of the Upstate New York Ford Thunderbird Club, member of the International Thunderbird Club, Early V8 Ford Club, Gore Mountain Old Timers Club and the Independent Telephone Pioneer Association.

Peter enjoyed many years at his camp in Old Forge. He loved entertaining his friends and family in the “Men’s Club” when they came to visit, many wonderful memories were made there at Third Lake.

He was well known for telling jokes, stories and singing Irish songs. To all who know and loved him, Peter was a patient, gentle and kind man.

Peter is survived by his wife Sharon, their daughter Jennifer and her husband Andrew Haskin of Madison, AL, his cherished grandsons Adam Peter and Brett Andrew; his sister’s Patricia Toussaint of Whitesboro and Maryan McCarthy, Clinton; sister-in-law Midge McCarthy, Barneveld. Brother-in-Law and sister-in-law Bill and Roberta Fahy, Albany, NY, sister-in-law Mary Farrell, New Hartford and his many loved nieces, nephews and friends.

Peter was predeceased by his brother Jerry McCarthy, Barne-veld and his two sisters, Johanna Sherman, Barneveld and Susan Donavan, Worchester, MA.

The family is grateful to the entire staff of the CCU at Faxton – St. Luke’s Healthcare Center for their incredible and passionate care for Peter and his family.

The family would also like to thank Dr. Butala and his staff as well as Dr. Christopher Max.

The funeral will be on Saturday, October 3 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leo’s and St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Holland Patent where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated.

Interment will be in Holland Patent Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be on Friday, October 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams Edmunds Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Whitesboro.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter’s memory may be made to the Adirondack Scenic Railroad or Utica Habitat of Humanity.
