Long-term forecast calling for a favorable leaf season, snowy winter for Upstate NY

The AccuWeather service has announced its long-range fall and winter forecasts for the northeastern United States, including upstate New York, where fall is expected to start warmer than usual before cooler, more seasonable air hits in late September.

Warm weather will still be poking through here and there, according to AccuWeather forecast expert Paul Pastelok.

“I think there’s going to be that back and forth still going on through mid-fall,” he said.

The region is expected to dry out ahead of winter, according to Pastelok.

Overall the weather will be conducive to leaf-peepers and those planning to attend harvest festivals, he said.

After a bitterly cold winter during 2014-2015, the winter of 2015-2016 will be milder, according to the AccuWeather forecast.

Snow-wise, the season is expected to be stormy with near- to above-normal snowfall.

Temperatures should become colder late in the season.

“In the Northeast, we’ve seen a couple of really nasty winters and lots of big storms.

And that was without El Niño. El Niño can bring lots of moisture. The question is always, is the cold there when the moisture arrives?” Pastelok said.

Cities such as Philadelphia and New York City should see some snow mid- to late-winter.

But the heaviest snow of the season will most likely fall north and west of these areas.
