The Artworks to close up shop in Old Forge; co-op gave retail venue to artisans for 22 years

It was announced this week that The Artworks, an arts and crafts co-op located at 3043 State Route 28, adjacent to Conscious Cotton, will be closing permanently.

The Artworks, which has been located at three previous locations since opening for business in July 1989, has provided an outlet for talented regional artists to sell their work, interact with customers, and to build friendships with other artists.

The shop displays an array of locally made pottery, woven items, woodcarvings, miniatures, pillows, jewelry, baskets, framed photographs and more.

During a meeting of its members on September 11, it was decided that the Artworks could no longer operate because of financial situations that were most likely related to the declining economy.

“Sometimes, good things have to come to an end,” said Artworks member, Gail Murray.

According to Murray, the Artworks’ last day of operation will be Friday, September 30.

Until then, some members may offer discounts on their work, Murray said.
