Hungry for that elusive first win in Eagle Bay history, The BombERNs took to Ern Park in hopes of victory.
But victory was hard to spot as a dozen Mudsliders put a seven spot on the board in the first inning.
The seventeen softballers from the waffled lake next door took down our green girls in blue by a final count of 18–4.
Constant improvement was notable yet again as this gaggle of girls learn to fly in formation.
Karen Hoskins’ steady glove at many positions is joined now by slugging upstart Brittany Sheldrick and game-changer Sara Shanahan, as the three girls spread out across seven positions throughout the evening’s match.
The BombERNs, while showing growing potential, excellent spirit and superior teamwork, are truly grasping the fielding intricacies of the game.
Confusion has been replaced with inning-ending double plays, and more frames than not, our girls shut down offenses quickly.
But the dames from Raquette opened The Tap and poured on runs in three big innings.
Their razor-edged defense sliced the wings of our ERNgels, who fell to earth on a bed of delightfully prepared eats by Linda Leszyk…at which point the girls again nailed down the 50/50, as per tradition.
The game was witnessed by a growing BombERN Nation.
Parking spots were jammed at Ern Park as the local scrape brought out a faithful crowd.
While the fan support bolstered the still high spirits of The Tavern Fifteen, Lynn “The Pencil” Durkin jotted down our defeat with the steady rhythm of a stenographer, acing her role.
Also, Charlie “Ump-Wagon” Sauer debuted with authority, while hecklers bounced harmlessly off of him.
The girls head into a bye-week this coming Tuesday, and look to support their sister squadron from The House of Slice & Brew (& Wine).
As the Screamers take to the highway, an escort of BombERNs look for some R&R while they cheer on Inlet’s taloned team, up in North Creek. (Make the drive…I dare you!)
