North Woods Community Center receives $10K for building improvements

The North Woods Community Center of Old Forge, Inc. has received a $10,000 grant from The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Inc. to implement rehabilitation and improvements to the 110-year-old original Masonic Temple building.

The project will allow for the replacement of designated doors and windows, improved energy efficiency, replacement of deteriorated siding and the priming and staining of the building exterior.

The complete project is estimated to cost approximately $28,500, with labor donated by both North Woods Center members and residents of the community.

Work is scheduled to begin shortly.

The North Woods Commu-nity Center of Old Forge was established in 2004 to preserve this historic building which was constructed in 1905 and is one of the oldest buildings within the village.

The building has previously housed the VFW Post, which still maintains a presence there, and is currently home to the Old Forge Dance Conservatory, North Woods Lodge #849, Order of Eastern Star #449, and the Kommunity Youth Activity Center (KYAC).

The building is also used by other community groups and for private functions.

The preservation of this building not only sustains an architectural treasure, but also sustains a gathering place for community organizations that promote the community vitality of Old Forge.

The North Woods Community Center was assisted in the preparation and submittal of this grant application through CAP-21.

The CAP-21 grant writing program receives sustaining support from the Central Adirondack Association (CAA) and the Towns of Webb and Inlet.
