VIEW: Community invited to sing in Niccolls Church Gospel Choir

VIEW will host a gospel service led by Rev. Lawrence Bartel, pastor of Niccolls Memorial Church, and the Rev. Shaun Whitehead, a chaplain at St. Lawrence University, as part of the art center’s Adirondack Music Fest on Sunday, September 20.

The service will be held at VIEW at 8:30 a.m.

The gospel service is free and open to the public and community members are invited to participate with the Niccolls Choir to sing in an informal gospel choir.

Youth through seniors who love to sing are encouraged to join.

“We will be singing from the heart so you don’t have to worry about how many years have passed since you last sang in a choir or if you can’t read sheet music,” said Rev. Bartel.

Rehearsals will be held prior to the September 20 service, he said, though rehearsals are not required to join in the gospel chorus.

The first casual gospel choir rehearsal will take place at Niccolls Church at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 14.

Pastor Lawrence and Rev. Whitehead were classmates at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.

Born and raised in Chicago, Rev. Whitehead began singing at a young age in the African American Church.

As an adult, she worked in radio for many years before answering God’s call to ministry.

In addition to her chaplaincy at St. Lawrence, she directs a community gospel choir, and is pastor of their weekly gospel worship service.

If you would like to sing in the gospel choir but are unable to make the initial rehearsal, contact Pastor Lawrence at (315) 369-3475.
