There will be an expansion to the Adirondack Women’s Softball League this summer as Linda and Pete Leszyk, owners of The Tavern in Eagle Bay, sponsor the latest team. The team will take on players representing Raquette Lake Tap Room, the Bear Trap in Indian Lake, North Creek Black Widows from the Inn on Gore, the Long Lake Barking Spiders, The Inn at Speculator, and the Inlet Hot Screamers of Screamen Eagle/Matt’s Draft House who went undefeated in the 2014 season. The team is being organized by Samantha Luce and will be coached by Ken Thibado. In an effort to raise money for equipment and team uniforms, the public is invited to an expansion team gathering at The Tavern on Sunday, April 26 beginning at 4 p.m. There will be drink specials, raffles, and a 50/50 raffle. Also, the name of the team will be announced during the event.

If you have ever thought about becoming a volunteer firefighter, emergency medical responder, a driver, or social member of the Otter Lake or Old Forge Fire Departments, stop by the respective fire houses on Saturday, April 25 or Sunday, April 26, as the departments take part in Recruit NY, the state-wide initiative to increase emergency responder numbers.

Otter Lake Fire Department’s event will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Old Forge Fire Department’s is set for Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

During both recruitment days emergency personnel will be available to answer questions on what it takes to be a volunteer, conduct tours of the station and firefighter apparatus, lead demonstrations, and fit visitors with firefighter/emergency gear. Refreshments will be served.

Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a volunteer but is unable to attend the open houses, can contact Otter Lake Chief Jeff Abrial at (315) 534-9340 or Old Forge Chief Charlie Bogardus at 369-5031. More information is available by calling either chief.
