I filed my tax return. Where is my refund?
To check on the status of your federal refund go online to: https://sa2.www4.IRS
.gov/irfof/lang/en/irfofgetstatus.jsp.
Your information should be available within 24 hours after the IRS receives your e-filed tax return or four weeks after you mail your paper return.
You will need the primary taxpayer’s social security number, filing status and exact refund amount.
If you don’t find computers “user friendly,” gather the same information and call (800) 829-1954.
For New York State refunds go to: www8.tax.ny.gov/PRIS
/prisStart. You will be asked for the primary social security number, form filed (IT-201, IT-150 etc.) and the exact refund amount.
If you electronically filed the information will be available one week after the acceptance of the filing or four weeks or more for a paper return.
Or call (518) 457-5149 for the automated income tax refund status.
How do I determine if I have to file a tax return?
The requirement to file depends in part on your filing status, age, and gross income.
If you are single, you must file a tax return if your gross income was at least $10,150 ($20,300 if married and filing jointly.)
If you are over 65, the gross income requirement raises to $11,650 ($22,700 if married and filing jointly and both filers are over 65.)
The IRS provides a chart in the instruction booklets for the 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ.
However you will have to file a return to receive any money that was withheld on any type of income or to receive any refundable credits such as the Earned Income Credit, Additional Child Tax Credit, New York State Property tax credit or the NYS Emergency Volunteer credit.
