Town of Webb Police Department reports law enforcement activity

The Town of Webb Police Department has issued the following public message and a report of recent law enforcement activity.

Police Chief Ron Johnston is alerting residents to a mail scam involving a bogus claim by the IRS that an enclosed check, made payable to the recipient, represents an overpayment of current taxes.

The correspondence is stamped with what appears to be an official IRS logo and bears personal information of the recipient.

However, the text is riddled with grammatical and spelling errors.

The mailing may be followed up with an email, allegedly generated by the FBI.

Chief Johnston reminds the public to never respond to such emails or mail and to not provide personal information when requested.

If anyone receives suspicious materials either by mail or email, contact him at (315) 369-3157.

The rule of thumb is, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” he said.

A 55-year-old New Hartford, NY woman was charged with failure to stop at a stop sign, refusal to take a breath test, and driving while intoxicated following an incident that occurred on Saturday, January 31, 2015.

According to the report, Webb Police Patrol observed the defendant’s vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign on Lamberton St. in Old Forge and pull out in front of an oncoming snowmobile.

The vehicle was stopped on Park Avenue/Gilbert Street. The patrolman detected a strong odor of alcohol, impaired speech and motor coordination of the subject.

She was placed under arrest following standardized field sobriety tests and transported to Webb Police Department for processing.

She was arraigned before Webb Justice John Graham and released to a third party. She was scheduled to appear in town court on February 5.
