Woodgate Library: CAP-21 secures $10K grant for restoration projects

The Central Adirondack Partnership (CAP-21) has secured a grant of $10,000 from The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Inc. to benefit the Woodgate Free Library.

The Woodgate Library undertook a major interior renovation program this year and as this renovation progressed they discovered structural issues with the roofing and foundation.

The grant will assist in the installation of new roof trusses and the complete resurfacing of the metal roof.

The original building was the first Woodgate schoolhouse constructed in 1881.

The building became the hamlet library in 1931 and the most recent addition and renovation to the library was completed in 1994.

The new roof will allow the preservation of restoration work completed to date and will be installed this fall prior to the winter season.

In addition, the library will have to take up the flooring in the original building, stabilize all flooring joists and foundation and relay the original wood flooring over the new foundation.

Additional renovation projects include the installation of a new fire alarm system and the construction of an accessible ramp that will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The Woodgate Library is the only public library within the Town of Forestport and currently has over 9,600 holdings.

The Library also owns and administers the White Lake Aid Society Community Hall on Bear Creek Road.

These two buildings are the primary cultural and historical gathering places within the Town of Forestport.

The library has been committed to sustaining community cultural life for over 80 years.

With the assistance of CAP-21 the library has also applied to the NYS Education Department’s Library Construction Fund and has been recommended for funding in the amount of $41,269 by the Mid-York Library System.

The final availability of these funds will most likely not be determined until Spring 2015.

The community grant writing program of CAP-21 was also initiated through a grant from The Community Foundation and receives sustaining support from the Central Adirondack Association (CAA), Herkimer County and the Towns of Inlet and Webb.
