Service set for Dorothy B. Sponable, 103

Dorothy B. Sponable, 103, of Old Forge, died October 7, 2014 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law at Okara Lakes.

She was born August 13, 1911 in Brooklyn, NY to Albert and Marie Brussel. The family moved to Old Forge in 1919. Dorothy graduated from the Town of Webb Schools in the class of 1929 and later from Browne Business College in Brooklyn.

Dorothy was secretary to the Superintendent of the Town of Webb Schools and later secretary to the General Manager of the Adirondack League Club in Old Forge.

In September 1940 she married George L. Sponable and joined her husband in the development of “George’s”, an Old Forge combined business (grocery, gift shop, florist, and liquor store.) She retired in 2005 upon selling the business.

Dorothy was a member of Niccolls Memorial Presbyterian Church in Old Forge for 91 years where she served as Trustee, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. She was also a member of the Old Forge Chapter Order of the Eastern Star for 85 years.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, George, and her son, Raymond George.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law Judith and Ronald Barker; two granddaughters and their husbands, Georgia and Larry Becker of Fort Mill, South Carolina and Carla and Tony Slaton Barker of Eagle River, Alaska; one great-granddaughter Lily Slaton Barker; two nephews and their wives, Albert and Ruth Brussel and Robert and Margaret Brussel, as well as several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Her funeral service will be held Monday, October 13 at 10:30 a.m. at Niccolls Memorial Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery.
