An open letter; mainly to NYS-DOT Has adequate attention been paid to the unexpected at McKeever Bridge?

This letter is mainly directed to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) having jurisdiction over the McKeever Bridge project.

Wiith what has taken place so far as to timing of repair delays, etc., there no doubt have been some complaints totally justified, and others run of the mill, more than likely.

One of my major thoughts to the NYSDOT and drivers in general, what if a major catastrophic occurrence takes place such as auto/autos with significant injuries involved? How long would accident reconstruction take?

Would longer than norm detours be involved, such as north by way on Moose River Rd. to Lowville, Stillwater, Big Moose, Eagle Bay to Rt 28? Along with southbound to south of Old Forge as the same detour, in reverse.

About now, some readers are saying this isn’t possible. Think again.

How’s this thought? What about a form of terrorism? There’s a word we are hearing a lot today. No way this could ever happen up in our beautiful north country.

This could be what is called a soft target, who knows by who at this point. Breaking a country’s economy, morale, infrastructure, etc. One thing Russia has been preaching for a long time, by taking this country over without firing a shot.

To the older readers, again, remember your history. For the young readers, learn your history and retain it.

Back to the NYSDOT. Has the thought of a portable, temporary bridge been thought of also?

They may look into a government Bailey Bridge—locating a narrow, shallow spot could be considered.

I’m sure some idea could or should be thought of. And if they have a plan for any of the above, give the public some idea.

I’m also sure there will be cost overrun with the sensor devices that didn’t work properly, where weekend and holiday workers were doing the regulating.

If the bridge is being destroyed over a period of time, I hope the NYSDOT is going to spend more money for research to combat the corrosives being used currently. Seems like a good deal of taxpayer money being used on many bridge projects around the state.

They’re not holding up the way you would think they would.

Thank you,

Don Olney,

Woodgate
