Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino, Westchester County’s current executive, paid a visit to Old Forge on Tuesday, July 15, for a campaign stop at View.
Mike Farmer, Town of Webb publicity director, welcomed Astorino, and gave a brief description of the Fulton Chain region, including its culture and economy.
About 65 community members were in attendance.
Astorino then introduced himself, describing his business and government service background, and why he decided to seek the governorship.
He took questions from audience members ranging from the state minimum wage to the controversial NY SAFE Act, that was intended to curb gun violence.
He described the SAFE Act as a misguided measure that fails to accomplish its goals, while encroaching on the liberties of law abiding citizens.
He also discussed Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo’s StartUp NY program, that was designed to spur economic growth in the state.
“StartUp NY is one of the biggest jokes there is,” Astorino said.
He said the program’s incentives benefit a small few, while leaving the rest of the states business to grapple with excessive taxation and regulation.
Ultimately, he said the program spends an inordinate amount of money on commercials that market the governor himself.
Asked about his prospects in unseating Governor Cuomo, Astorino said he likes his chances, and is confident about winning the ground war needed to get his supporters to the polls on election day.
The election for governor will be held on November 4th.
