The Town of Webb has been notified that a major bridge project has begun in McKeever, that will affect Route 28 traffic flow for an extended period.
The bridge, that crosses the Moose River, will have its bridge joints and bearings replaced.
There will also be repairs made to its piers, including columns and bearing pads.
The construction schedule will include work during the summers of 2014 and 2015.
The work is being done by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT).
Temporary traffic signals are already in place, having been installed on Monday, July 7.
These signals will be used to control traffic flow, that will be reduced to a single lane passage once construction starts, according to Alice Romanych of the NYS DOT.
“We are waiting to hear from National Grid to determine the date they will connect the power to the..signals,” she said in an email to Webb Supervisor Ted Riehle.
Motorists will be given seven days notice prior to the single lane reduction, Romanych said.
Variable Message Signs on Route 28 will be used to announce the activation of the lights and the start of “one-way reversible traffic” across the bridge, she said.
“Although much of the work will take place under the bridge, the ‘one-lane reversible traffic’ is necessary to minimize impact loads during the time the bridge will be on temporary supports to accommodate the repair of the piers and replacement of the bearings,” she said.
No construction will take place during the winter months.
“Two-way traffic will be permitted once this construction season is completed, and the one-way will be reestablished next spring,” Romanych said.
The project is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2015.
