VIEW sponsors trip to see An American Tragedy Opera at Glimmerglass

VIEW, the arts center in Old Forge, has organized a bus trip to Glimmerglass Opera House in Cooperstown for the Monday, August 11 performance of Tobias Picker’s opera, An American Tragedy.

Tickets are $135 and include a round trip to Glimmerglass on a luxury coach, level II seating, and a carryout lunch from the Mountainside Smokehouse and Grill in Eagle Bay. The bus departs at 9:15 a.m.

Tickets can be reserved by visiting ViewArts.org or calling (315) 369-6411, ext. 215.

Picker’s fourth opera portrays the darkest aspects of 1906 mysterious death of Grace Brown on Big Moose Lake, based on the novel, An American Tragedy, by Theodore Dreiser.

The opera premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 2005 to great acclaim and has now been slightly revised in celebration of the composer’s 60th birthday.

The chilling story of Chester Gillette’s unfortunate choices leading up to the murder trial of Grace Brown have always been of national interest and quite close to home for this Herkimer County incident and lengthy legal accord.

The new Glimmerglass production will be conducted by George Manahan, a leading advocate of Picker’s music, who conducted the world premiere of Picker’s first opera, mmeline, t Santa Fe Opera in 1996, as well as the opera’s New York premiere at New York City Opera in 1998.

Manahan conducted the world premiere of Picker’s fifth opera, olores Claiborne, at San Francisco Opera in September 2013.

VIEW is a multi-arts center located at 3273 State Route 28 in Old Forge.
