High school senior, Corey Down, 17, has lived in Old Forge all his life and has been a student at Town of Webb since kindergarten.
In the fall, he plans to attend SUNY Delhi for Construction Management.
Corey said he chose that major because he loves outdoor activity, the building trade in particular. “There’s a lot of hands on learning with the career, too,” he said.
Corey’s favorite classes are all his technology classes with Mr. Bradish, because of the hands on learning, he said.
His favorite teacher is Mr. Kinney. “He’s very laid back and relaxed,” he said.
Down has been a member of the school golf and alpine ski teams since the seventh grade. This year, he was selected to ski at the state meet.
Corey is a member of Varsity Club and Student Council.
When he’s not in school, he enjoys fishing, hunting and riding his dirt bike.
“I love to be out on the boat and waterskiing is one of my favorite things to do,” he said. He is also a country music fan.
Corey’s parents are Tom and Tracy Down. Tracy is a Math Academic Intervention Services (AIS) teacher at the Town of Webb school, and Tom owns and operates TA Down Construction in Old Forge.
Corey has one brother, Austin, who is currently attending SUNY Delhi, where he also studies construction.
During the summer, Corey said he works with his father.
He also has a side business mowing lawns, which he said keeps him pretty busy.
Corey also intends to return to Daikers Inn in Old Forge, where he has worked in the past.
He will be a host for the dining area, and possibly a bouncer.
Corey says his father influenced him the most. “We have a lot of the same interests, and he has taught me so much,” he said.
Corey has a lot of favorite memories of Old Forge and the Town of Webb school; so many that it’s hard to settle on just one, he said.
This summer, he plans to enjoy the time off from school. “It will go by fast and will seem very short,” he said.
Corey has two dogs, Molly and Lexi, who he says he will miss a lot when he’s at school.
He said he’ll also miss his friends, the freedom of Old Forge and being able to enjoy the outdoors whenever he wants.
