Score it a success: The new indoor soccer field at the George T. Hiltebrant Recreation Center on North Street kicked off to a great start, with a good number of participants having enjoyed the facility this winter, according to Town of Webb Recreation Director, Jason Perkins.
Perkins was on hand at the Town Board’s June 10th meeting to report on the facility’s season, and his gratification with the attendance and the number of leagues that assembled.
Perkins organized a co-ed league for ages 16 and over. It included sixteen sessions, that averaged over 17 participants each.
“I thought it was extremely successful,” he said.
There was also a women’s league night that had eight sessions and an average of ten participants.
He commented on how the time to take it down was much less than anticipated.
With only four or five volunteers, they finished putting away the turf in just a little over an hour with no conflicts, he said.
Perkins reported that only four hours of total heat usage were needed for the whole season.
He hopes to be able to have the field up and running at least seven to eight weeks in the fall, before having to take it down for Snodeo weekend in December.
“Participants are most interested in soccer in the fall, since they’re already playing,” he said.
Councilwoman Kate Russell suggested that it would be a good idea to have the field up and running for the Columbus Day Tournament held at North Street in October.
“Many community members attend the games; it’ll be great if we could show what we have,” she said.
In addition to his indoor soccer report, Jason recommended new Playschool counselors, which were then appointed by the Board for the upcoming summer.
Those counselors are Alex Levi, Molly Rodriguez, and Kaylin Parent.
There will be seven counselors total, four of which are returning from last summer’s program.
