Republican Matt Doheny announces Congressional bid for 21st District

Watertown businessman Matt Doheny has announced his bid for New York’s 21st Congressional District seat and will seek the Republican, Independence and Conservative party lines for the November 4 election.

Doheny was a three-parties’ candidate in the 2012 election, losing by 1.9 percent of the vote to Representative Bill Owens in one of the closest House races in the nation. IMG_1779******

Owens, a Democrat, announced on January 14 that he would not run for a third term.

A native of Alexandria Bay, Doheny, 43, is a graduate of Allegheny College and received his law degree at Cornell University.

After practicing law in Syracuse, he transitioned into the business world.

He managed more than 130 individuals at Deutsche Bank while helping purchase and improve large troubled companies.

In 2008, he joined Fintech Advisory, a money management firm. He left Fintech in 2010 and started his own business, North Country Capital LLC, which is based in Watertown.

Doheny has previously taught finance and business courses at both Clarkson University and Jefferson Community College.

He and his wife, Mary, reside in Watertown with their seven-month-old son, Declan.

“I’ve made a career out of finding ways to create growth opportunities, turn troubled companies around, balance budgets and protect American jobs,” Doheny said.

“I want to apply that expertise to the problems facing Congress, while helping my community—the North Country, Adirondacks and Capital Region—attract good-paying jobs that are vital in the 21st century economy,” he said.

During his 2012 Congressional bid, Doheny made several visits to the Old Forge area to speak directly with business owners about their economic challenges and to discuss tourism issues.
