When Senior Sara Dempsey moved to Old Forge in eighth grade from a much bigger school in Langhorne, PA, she said it wasn’t that hard to adjust because she really liked the small school atmosphere. And that feeling continues to this day.
“I really like how close our senior class is, especially the girls,” she said.
As for the future she said she is excited to get out of school and do something with her life.
Sara, who is interested in culinary arts, has applied to Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI.
“I like it a lot, it’s a really good culinary school and I’m excited about the internship program they offer in the first year,” she said.
Following college she is interested in starting her own business or working for someone very accomplished in the field.
“I need something hands-on, I can’t sit behind a desk.”
Her interest in the culinary field came from watching her parents cook and work at the Tamarack Café in Inlet for four years where she also bussed tables, waitressed and helped out in the kitchen.
She found out about Johnson & Wales through a family friend who attended the school, and also heard good things about it when she attended a culinary program at BOCES last year.
In January, Sara began a senior internship at Ozzie’s Coffee Bar through the Town of Webb School’s Educational Studies Career Opportunities (ESCO) program.
Sara said that over the years, her government classes at Webb have been her favorite
“I love AP government and I love learning about current events. I always liked Global Studies in 9th and 10th grades with Mr. Johnston. He makes class fun, he’s so funny,” she said.
Sara has been active in athletics and enjoys much of what Old Forge has to offer.
“I’ve always skied and snowmobiled, and I do play soccer and volleyball.”
She has played soccer since 9th grade as a defense fullback and was very excited to go to sectionals. Looking ahead she said, “I’m going to miss the tournaments they are so much fun. The best part about school was the Columbus Day activities.”
Reflecting on her plans for the future she said, “You’ve got to have a plan. I’ve kind of been set for the past couple of months on what I want to do and I want to stick with that, because it’s my future.”
