When the gates open to the Inlet Golf Club this May, golfers will be greeted by Mike Beck as the course’s new golf professional.
Beck, an Inlet native who previously served as assistant pro at Thendara Golf Club, and most currently as the PGA pro at Vesper Hills Country Club, will fill the golf shoes of the late Roland Christy who passed away in April 2013.
Beck said he has the highest respect for the Lind family, owners of the course, and is humbled by the appointment.
And he’s excited to work at the place where he gained a lifelong passion for the sport and to follow in the footsteps of his mentor, Roland.
“I can’t wait for the season to start. I learned how to play the game on the site of the rules and regulations sign—where the ladies tee used to be—at Inlet. That’s where Roland showed me how to play when I was five,” Beck said.
Beck’s duties as pro will include working in the pro shop, serving as a starter on the first tee, rangering the course, and giving lessons.
Welcoming guests is also a big part of the job, he said.
“I’ll help Margie (Lind) with scheduling golf outings and putting together the scores, tee sheets, and so forth. I want to continue the course’s reputation of treating its guests well…I’m looking forward to being part of it,” he said.
In the off-season, he’s doing whatever he can to promote the golf course, such as keeping the website updated, he said.
He also plans on having a booth at the Golf Show in Syracuse in February and attending other golf-related expos.
“We are very happy to have Mike with us to carry on the welcoming tradition that Roland was well known for,” said Roger Lind.
