View: Holy Mola! Panama-inspired quilts on display

Quilts inspired by the Molas of Panama are on display at 27th Annual Quilts Unlimited at View in Old Forge. Art Quilt People, a group of contemporary artists from upstate New York who have shown their work nationally and internationally, are exhibiting original artworks inspired by molas.

A mola is an elaborate reverse appliquéd piece typically created by women of the Guna Indians of the San Blas Islands off the coast of Panama who wear them on the fronts and backs of blouses.

Priscilla Kibbee, a well-traveled member of AQP, introduced the molas she brought back from a trip to Panama.

Graphic in design and bold color, these traditional molas can be viewed in addition to the judged art quilts and Hoppe baskets.

Members of Art Quilt People, have each chosen a mola and constructed an original fiber piece.

Their works are shown alongside the molas that inspired them.

The works are as varied as the artists, but show a common strength in working in fiber.

The admission for The Quilts Unlimited Exhi-bition will be on display through January 5th.

Admission is $8 or $4 for members. Groups of 10 or more are admitted for $6 per person with children under 12 admitted free.
